BOSS Eddie Howe has expressed his delight at Cherries duo Callum Wilson and Baily Cargill earning maiden international call-ups for England.

In-form striker Wilson has been named in Gareth Southgate’s under-21 squad for friendlies against Portugal and France later this month.

And teenage defender Cargill is one of the youngest players included in an under-20 squad for a double-header against Canada and Portugal.

Wilson has caught the eye after netting 11 goals – including nine in the Championship – since his big-money move from Coventry City in the summer.

He will link up with England following Cherries’ clash at Middlesbrough on Saturday, with the Three Lions hosting Portugal at Burnley’s Turf Moor on Thursday before meeting France in Brest a week on Monday.

Cargill, who has just turned 19, was fast-tracked to Howe’s first-team squad in the summer and has played a starring role in helping the club reach the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

Although yet to make an appearance in the Championship, Cargill, who was last month rewarded with a new two-and-a-half year contract, cemented his place in the England squad after turning in another assured display against Premier League West Brom in the fourth round.

Cargill, released by Southampton when he was 12, will be hoping to feature when England host Canada at Dean Court on Wednesday and when they face Portugal in Coimbra on November 17.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “I am really pleased for both lads and it is great reward for their hard work. Their success doesn’t come from anything other than putting in a real shift every day and wanting to improve their respective games.

“Both players have shown those attributes and have got their heads down and worked really hard. They both have obvious qualities. Callum has pace and strength and his finishing ability has really come to the fore. Baily’s composure and maturity for such a young guy have really seen him flourish.

“It is early days in both players’ careers and I think they would both say they have a lot more they want to achieve. But these are the first positive steps to fulfilling those dreams.”
