BAILY Cargill is adamant he would not change anything about his Dean Court development and says he would encourage potential pros to follow a similar path.

The centre-back, elevated to Cherries’ first team this season, signed a fresh two-and-a-half-year deal on Monday following a string of excellent displays in the League Cup.

The new contract is Cargill’s third in 16 months and is another step in the right direction for the 19-year-old, who spent time on loan with Southern League Totton two seasons ago.

That temporary spell was followed by stints at Welling and Torquay in 2013-14 – the latter being Cargill’s first experience of the Football League.

And the former Southampton and Leicester youngster explained that game time in the lower leagues had helped him arrive in his current favourable position.

Cargill told the Daily Echo: “Those loan moves to Totton, Welling and Torquay helped me gain experience and took me to where I am now, so I am really grateful for what those clubs did for me.

“In my short career so far I have made little steps up. I started off at Totton, made the step up to Welling and then Torquay and I think I handled those moves fairly well.

“The way I have been fed into football has been pretty steady and my progression has been pretty steady as well. I haven’t been one of those lads that has burst on the scene, I’ve had to work for it and bide my time and, hopefully, I’ve taken my chances.

“I would not change anything about how it has gone and if I could give any advice to people that are in the position I was two years ago, it would be to go out on loan and work hard, because then you get the opportunities to get where you want to be.”

Cargill paid tribute to the role of Cherries boss Eddie Howe in his development and said he was grateful to have received first-team chances.

“I think it’s really nice of the gaffer and the club to show faith in me by giving me a new deal and also by playing me in games at such a young age,” said Cargill.

“The gaffer wants the best for my development and wants me to be the best player I can be. He could not have been better with me.

“He has said I will get my opportunity in the Championship eventually, it’s just waiting for the right time. Hopefully, I will get my chance.”
