CHAIRMAN Jeff Mostyn has revealed he missed Cherries’ record-breaking win at Birmingham – after spreading the word on the Dorset club in the Caribbean.

Mostyn was unable to attend St Andrew’s as he was flying back from Barbados where he had been a guest speaker at the CONCACAF Soccerex Americas Forum last week.

He gave a presentation on Cherries’ progress as a football club to more than 1,000 leading administrators, rights holders, coaches and former players from across the Americas.

“Most of our supporters know I rarely miss a game but this was one I am always going to regret not being able to see!” joked Mostyn, an elected Football League representative on the FA Council.

“But while the boys were winning 8-0 in Birmingham, I was travelling back having put the club on the global map so I consider it a double victory!

“I was proud, honoured and privileged to have been asked to give a presentation about our club to world dignitaries such as Jeffrey Webb, the president of CONCACAF, the commissioners of the MLS and NASL, the governor of Barbados and the sports minister for Brazil.”

Mostyn added: “Although I wasn’t there, on behalf of the board, I would like to congratulate Eddie, Jason and the team for an outstanding display. While 8-0 was a record-breaking score in the club’s history, to do it away from home in the Championship against a club with such a rich tradition and history puts it all into context.

“Whether it was five, six, seven or eight, I believe the team has had that in it because we have been playing such good football this season. I thought somebody at some stage was going to be on the end of a good hiding and, unfortunately for Birmingham City, it just happened to be them which must have been very difficult to stomach.

“But I am told we showed the utmost respect to our opponents and there was no showboating. We certainly would not like to have seen that if we had been on the end of a beating and the boys can carry their heads high.”

Mostyn was also keen to praise the role of boss Eddie Howe’s backroom team and added: “I would like to say a big thank you to the support staff. They work hard day in, day out and have responsibility for the players’ fitness levels and physical and psychological conditioning.

“Four successive wins in the Championship is testament to the work they have done and worthy of mention as well as an 8-0 victory. The team are not winning games by accident and there is an amazing amount of hard work which has gone behind the scenes.”
