HARRY Arter admits the manner of his Charlton exit still rankles as he prepares for a potential reunion with his former employers.

The midfielder, raised in neighbouring Eltham, joined the Addicks at the age of seven but was released by then-boss Phil Parkinson in 2009.

After a successful stint at non-league Woking, the Londoner joined Cherries in June 2010 and has remained at Dean Court ever since.

However, ahead of this afternoon’s Championship clash (3pm) with Bob Peeters’ side, the former Republic of Ireland under-19 international admitted he had tried everything to keep his Charlton career alive.

“Up until my last two years there I loved it,” Arter told the South London Press. “Charlton really helped to progress me and are still close to my heart.

“In my time as a pro there we had a lot of different managers – Iain Dowie, Les Reed and Alan Pardew. I got on with all of them – until Phil Parkinson was in charge.

“Managers have opinions of what they want and I didn’t fit his criteria. It was disappointing because I’d only been back fit (from a serious Achilles injury) for six months.

“The year I got released, they were relegated from the Championship. There was a lot of pressure on the manager to cut costs and streamline the squad.

“But I was only 18 when I got released and I felt it was a bit premature. I’d had offers when I was 16 to go to bigger clubs but I stuck with Charlton. I stayed loyal.

“The money I was asking for at a League One club was nothing. I would have taken anything to stay at the time, so it wasn’t down to finance, it was him (Parkinson) not liking me as a footballer. That left a bit of a sour taste.

“My emotion on leaving was great sadness and anger. I made my debut for the club when I was 16. I still look out for them a hell of a lot and I’d say I’m a Charlton fan.

“I’d been there from our Premier League years to League One. I pulled out every card I could to stay.

“When I reflect on my time at Charlton, though, it is one I really enjoyed. I want to see the club do well and be successful.”

The 20-year-old has been with the Gulls on a temporary basis since August.
