CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe has called for a more liberal sprinkling of goalscoring magic from his midfielders following Harry Arter’s blockbuster at Watford.

Arter smashed home a 25-yard Exocet which sent the visiting supporters into raptures at Vicarage Road before Craig Cathcart’s leveller held Cherries to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

But after witnessing Arter’s first away goal in the Championship, Howe hopes the stunning strike will act as an inspiration to his colleagues in the middle of the park – particularly on the road.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “With the system we play away from home, we need our midfielders to pop up with goals and it was a great strike by Harry.

“He has got that in his game and we would love to see that a little bit more because when you play that way, you do need a goal threat.

“Callum (Wilson) certainly provided that up front but we need more than just him.”

Meanwhile, Howe felt Watford defender Gabriel Tamas should have been dismissed for his fourth-minute foul on the Cherries striker which led to Ian Harte’s missed penalty.

Referee Oliver Langford immediately pointed to the spot but stopped short of dishing out any further punishment, despite Wilson bearing down on Hornet’s keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Howe said: “My immediate thought was that it would be red or yellow.

"We were hoping for red and felt that was justified so for the referee to not even book Tamas I found an amazing decision when you consider Callum was clean through on goal.

“We were disappointed with two or three decisions but the officials have a difficult job to do.”

Watford assistant boss Ruben Martinez felt his side should have had a second-half penalty when Simon Francis tangled with Ikechi Anya but Howe felt Langford had handled that decision well.

Howe said: “I think there was a decision to make, it wasn’t a clearcut no but it was a 50-50 call.

If it had been given I would have argued it but it was one of those difficult ones.

“I think the referee can only give a penalty when he’s absolutely sure.

“I don’t think you can criticise a referee for not giving it if he isn’t certain.”
