Howe: New Cherries signing Cornick very different to Austin

EDDIE Howe played down comparisons between Harry Cornick and Charlie Austin after sealing a deal for the latest Wessex League wonder.

The Cherries boss yesterday gave Cornick a chance to fulfil his potential after handing the Christchurch hotshot a place in the professional ranks.

Poole-based teenager Cornick has been recruited by Howe after scoring in a reserve game during a successful trial with the Dorset club in November.

The speedy winger, who signed an 18-month contract, will continue to play for Christchurch and complete his A-levels in biology, psychology and PE at Poole Grammar School before joining Cherries permanently in pre-season.

Cornick’s huge leap from step five of the non-league pyramid will inevitably lead to him being likened to former Poole Town striker Austin.

Austin’s talents were first recognised by Howe before he went on to forge a prolific reputation with Swindon and Burnley, initially under Howe.

But Howe told the Daily Echo: “I would be reluctant to compare him with Charlie because Charlie was different.

“He had been in that environment for a long time and just by looking at Charlie you could tell he was a man – even then at such a young age.

“But Harry is different. He is a little bit more fragile and we have definitely got to take care of him physically but he has different attributes to Charlie as well.”

First linked to Cherries in the Echo in September, Cornick was also understood to have attracted interest from the likes of Stoke City, Southampton, Reading and Fulham. But Howe secured his services and then urged the 17-year-old to put in the work and dedication.

He said: “Hopefully, he will adapt and learn and listen to the coaches that will work with him and make good progress because we saw in the reserve game, although it was a brief appearance, that he is very quick, and anyone with pace does have a chance.

“We are only too delighted to give him this opportunity. He is a great lad with a really good attitude and he wants to learn and get better. Those are all the things we look for in players.”

Howe, who labelled the deal “a risk worth taking” for both parties, added: “He has got pace, good feet and an eye for goal. It is very much a case of a year for Harry to see if he can make a career in the game.

“He needs a lot of work and dedication now to see if he can make a go of it.”

While Christchurch are likely to host Cherries in a friendly as part of the deal, they will not receive a transfer fee as Cornick was not on contract. Cornick becomes the fifth Priory player to join a professional club, following Jody Craddock (Cambridge United), Dan West (Aston Villa), Ben Dickenson (Brighton) and Michael Green (Port Vale).

When Christchurch knew clubs were interested was it not worth putting Harry on a contract? Even until the end of the season, i am sure someone at the club could have afforded £10 a week! Just a thought, as a non paying club Christchurch could have done with the extra income that all those players leaving could have generated

Some very sound advice from Eddie, I am sure that Harry will receive some very good coaching if Eddie Howe has anything to do with it.

Good luck with the rest of your studies Harry and don't forget how important it is to do well with your education because the footballing life is a short one it is always wise to have other avenues open to you.

On a different note I think it would have been a nice gesture for the loyal fans who travelled to Wigan to have given them a couple of days to get tickets for the replay on production of a Wigan ticket stub I know of a few who spent 10 Hrs travelling and couldn't get a ticket for the replay when ppl who didn't go was buying 6 tickets at a time....Welcome to AFCB Harry I saw you at the Rovers friendly and was impressed

Agreed - I know a few who've missed out as well. Not very well handled by the club, but I doubt EM will care, as he's got a full house and some more cash in the bank.

It was a bit chaotic down at Dean Court this morning. I know it is short notice to arrange ticket distribution for cup replays ten days later, but it would be good to have some priority policy in place for fans who are regular supporters. I am fortunate enough to be a season ticket holder so had until Friday to pick up my ticket. Trying to get through on the phone lines is a nightmare when they're busy. Trying to get through if you work Monday to Friday is almost impossible. I wanted another two tickets, one for my son who has been a season ticket holder for 13 years until this season as he know lives in London and one for a friend who went to Wigan away and is a lifelong supporter and in the forces. Only able to get another two by chance from other season tickets who can't make it. Who would have thought we would have had this problem a couple of months ago, where we were struggling to get 5,000 supporters in the ground. Looks like Swindon is going to be a sell out too, as there were limited tickets available this morning. Pompey on sale at the moment and will probably be the same. If you want tickets I'd get your skates on. Sorry about the pun !!!

once-upon-a-time retaining the ticket stub from the previous FA Cup round was considered as proof that you were there and could have been used to purchase the ticket for the following round I don't think that it is a too diffuclt system to have in place to guarantee ticket/s.

For example the club could have said that the first two days only stub holders could have purchased tickets before releasing the rest and for season ticket holder to be treated in the usual way.

However I can understand the problem for those who work Monday to Friday of course the ticket office could open during non working hours!!!

I guess there will never be a full proof system.

True a lot of people do work Monday till Friday but if you had your Wigan ticket someone could have picked it up for you.
as nanno said if the 1st 2 days was for away ticket holders they would at least be see to be trying. Also it would have helped to reduce the mad rush we had. It is of no consequence to me as I am a season ticket holder and got mine today with only 10 minutes to wait but I also feel for the fans that made the trip and now miss the replay.

I am a season ticket holder so is my dad, on Tuesday morning he was in town so he popped into the pavilion at 11am picked up our tickets and was in there for 2 mins, no queue at all. I do feel really sorry for our regular supporters that go every week but because they don't have a season ticket get treated the same as those that only turn up when we are doing well. Whoever has been in charge of our club over the years the one thing they have in common is not being able to sort the ticket office out

Refreshing in this time of over paid over rated players and greedy clubs. Good luck to harry and eddie for taking a chance

I am with you on this one as I know six lads will be there and neither of them have attended any games at Dean Court. When I got mine this morning (with my season ticket) I was told that my actual seat had been sold but the one next to my regular seat was available and would I mind seating between Mr and Mrs So and so!! no problems I said but how come that my seat had been sold?

I know of a couple of season ticket holders who haven't taken up their usual seats, as they have bought seats elsewhere in the ground because friends/family wanted to go to this game too and they all want to sit together. So, there will be more tickets available on Saturday morning. I've no idea how many though. Perhaps the ticket office could reveal?
