Cherries: Arter claims he is a target for referees

CHERRIES midfielder Harry Arter claims he is being singled out by referees due to his poor disciplinary record.

Arter is facing a second suspension of the season after picking up his fifth booking of the campaign during Cherries’ 2-2 draw at Bury on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, who was cautioned for disputing a controversial penalty decision, will be forced to sit out Cherries’ FA Cup second round clash at Carlisle.

Arter, who served a one-match ban after getting sent off during a 1-1 draw with Preston in August, has received no fewer than 20 yellow cards and one red in his past 54 appearances.

His booking at Gigg Lane came after referee Carl Boyeson had awarded Cherries a spot kick for handball and then changed his mind following consultation with his assistant.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Arter said: “Their player handled it. He headed the ball into his hand and the referee, who was face-on, gave it. I don’t know why he consulted the linesman because he was miles away. It was a strange decision.

“He chose to book me because I was probably saying out loud what the supporters were all saying in the stand. I didn’t say anything too bad and didn’t swear or anything.

“I just asked the linesman why he had got involved. I don’t know why he convinced the referee that there hadn’t been a handball when the referee had seen it. He was a lot closer and could see it.”

Arter, who missed six games through suspension last season, added: “I have been in control of my discipline in the past few games. To get a decision like that was disappointing.

“I probably shout more than the other lads but some of them were saying the same as I was and it was only me who got booked.

“I feel I am being highlighted before a game. In a way, I have earned that reputation so it is my fault. But, in another way, it is unfair on me.”

Referee Boyeson had earlier warned Arter about his conduct when he spoke to him in the presence of Cherries captain Miles Addison.

Arter added: “The ref was saying to me during the game ‘oh, it’s you again, it’s you again’. He told me he had known about me before the game and said to nip it in the bud. I don’t know whether he had refereed a game before and I had said something to him.

“I don’t think it is fair that I am being singled out a lot more than other players. Six or seven of our players said a lot worse than I did but he decided to book me.”

Best solution to all this Harry is to learn to shut up!! Quite simple really, don't give the ref a reason to book you, especially as you feel you are being "singled out", no one to blame but yourself!!

Harry, I thought you'd grown up since Eddie returned. No offence, but why would referees target you? Maybe they target Luis Suarez in the Premier League, but with all due respect, most referees have probably never heard of you before the match.

Also, I agree with the above comment, shut up!

Never understand why there is such a lack of personal responsibility in society today. If Harry accepted that he backchats referrees too much then he can learn to shut up.

All we would have to do then is work on his rash challenges and he would be more of an asset than a liability.

BTW Harry, if you want to know why the linesman 'got involved', what with being a match official and all. Read the article about it, quite enlightening to have the refs point of view.

Harry, the referees and linesmen try their best to get the decisions correct, which they do 99% of the time. You need to show them the respect they deserve. We are not paid to behave in a professional manner in supporting our team on the terraces. It's frankly ridiculous to point out to the ref that the rose coloured spectacled travelling supporters thought it was a penalty. You've improved your behaviour this season to you credit, but you need to take responsibility for your actions and cut out this nonesense of blaming others.

Get real Arter ! your play has improved amazingly but lets face it in every match you are at risk- you consistently niggle and complain.... opposition players will know now that with enough winding up, you will eventually have an outburst........its not good enough from a pro footballer.

In part it's because he gets so involved in the game and is passionate about it - but he really must learn to keep his trap shut, he can't be of much use to the team if you are suspended or sent off.

So Harry, you think that you are being singled out by referees, but you still keep on moaning at them?

Now that is really stupid!

You have proved yourself to be a terrific footballer this season, so please, please, please, stop getting involved in pointless arguments with refs - when you feel the urge coming on, run as far away from the ref as possible.

None of our supporters are going to have any sympathy with you at all if you regularly deprive the team of one of its best players simply because you can't keep your mouth shut!

The best thing Eddie Howe can do is introduce club fines for dissent. Dock em 20% wages for each breach of discipline. The players will soon learn to keep it zipped. Give the money to good causes or youth development.

Harry in future run to your captain and ask him to seek an explanation.

Unless I am wrong the ref always calls the two captains together when they want to communicate during a game.

However the suggestions made on here are all sound advice the best one is keeping your mouth firmly shut!! You are a good player let your skills do the talking

Dissent Harry boy....Keep your mouth closed.I dont believe you're being 'picked on'.You need to stop tese needless bookings.Your stating 'thelinesman shouldnt have got involved...' is ludicrous.Hes there to do a job.

You are "singled out" Harry because at least once in every game you throw yourself theatrically to the floor or go to ground way too easily or some such similar gamesmanship and by doing so have earned yourself a reputation with referees. Add to that how often you feel it necessary to charge across a pitch to question a referees decision, it's not really a surprise to anyone else why you find yourself in the book so often.

Just stop it! You are an incredibly gifted player and when you concentrate on your football you are a joy to watch. Stop wasting that amazing talent you have, please! Keep your mouth shut, cut out the gamesmanship and let your natural talent do the talking. There is a difference between passion and a lack of discipline and sadly you all to often fall into the latter and far too often let us the fans, your team mates, your manager but most of all yourself down.
