Pelhams face a golden year

IT'S a golden summer for Pelhams who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

With a mixed membership of over 130, the Kinson club have come a long way since being formed by 13 men in 1958.

Robert Trevett MBE was their first president with a joining fee of 10s and an annual fee of 7s 6d, committee meetings being held either in the Royal Oak pub nearby or the greenkeeper's hut.

The current pavilion was built in 1966 and extended four years ago with a larger kitchen, new bar and disabled facilities.

Another landmark followed in 1985 when the ladies' section was created with 21 bowlers and the president of that year Ted Banks donated a trophy for the women's club championship which is still played for.

Over their half-century the Pelhams men and ladies have won more than 40 league championships and 37 county and Bournemouth and District awards.

Most intriguing of their Hampshire successes was in 1988 when the rink of Roger Merrifield, Malcolm Jolliffe, Barry Rankine and skip Graham Stukins qualified for Worthing.

As Merrifield had an aversion to travelling by car, bus or train he cycled to Sussex with his woods carried by his team-mates.

Besides being president for this milestone year, long-serving Brian Skyvington has been club captain for the past five seasons. He is keen to find a sponsor for Pelhams' two B&D men's sides in a season that sees a celebration match against a Bournemouth and District BA team and a dinner at the Queen's Hotel, Bournemouth, in September.

Despite their healthy membership, the club always welcomes newcomers and besides teams in the B&D men's and women's and the Evening Triples leagues they also have an active social section during the winter.

The club hold a free-play open day on Sunday, May 4 (10am). More details from Barry Duxbury (01202 575517).
