It’s back to winning ways for the champs

AFTER last week’s hiccup, reigning champions Boscombe Cliff resumed normal service with a clinical and confident victory at Branksome Park.

Alex Findlay, Dave Halliday, Stan Jordan and Alan Geary (21-11) headed the Cliff’s three winning rinks (89-66). The Squirrels’ only success came from Paul Tidby’s quartet (23-19).

Meanwhile, both Alexandra Park and Poole Park teams registered 12-2 wins.

Alex defeated Wimborne as Mark Wanklyn’s squad of David Baxter, Eric Simon and Richard Cake (27-7) set the pattern for a convincing 92-60 exercise over the Minstermen, for whom Brian Shepherd’s crew (27-19) collected two points.

Poole Park’s 91-60 triumph came at New Milton, leaving the hosts nine points from safety. Paul Spetch’s quartet (25-12) led the Lakesiders to glory, while New Milton avoided total humiliation as Brian Herlihy, not for the first time this year, won on the last end (16-15).

Knyveton Gardens completed back-to-back wins as four rinks came out on top against West Moors (109-58). The pick of the bunch was a resounding 32-13 result delivered by Jim Flexman’s rink of Mark Grimes, Dave Swindells and Martin Brierley (32-13). Next up for the Gardeners were Dave Hart’s bucks (29-13).

Bournemouth made it three in a row when winning at Ringwood 12-2 (83-70). Terry Chivers (22-19) collected a last-end five for the Marauders after Colin Bingley, Mike Aldren, Kevin Saunders and Gerry Potts had paved the way winning 17-11. Peter Ward held off a late challenge (20-19) for Ringwood’s two points.

SECTION TWO

LEADERS Southbourne went 13 points clear after their 11-3 (80-73) win at Fordingridge. Bob Read, Keith Holbrook, Frank Warren and Dean Hopkins (24-15) gained top honours for the Towermen. The Fordingbridge winning rink was skipped by David Bradley (21-12).

Derek Purse (Turks) and Forrest Thomson (Southbourne) finished all-square (20-20) after Thomson picked up two shots on the last end.

Lymington’s poor away form continued with a 10-4 (77-68) defeat at Boscombe Cliff A. Roy Richardson’s crew (20-12) top-scored for Lymo, but were surpassed by the Cliff’s best return of 28-19 by Malcolm Perkins, Peter Gregory, Graham Matthews and Fred Harwood.

Southbourne B must harbour hopes that it could be a double promotion for the club after collecting 12 points in their 92-59 rout of Braeside. Derek Painter, Keith Aldridge, Jack Mann and John Hutchinson (32-13) set the pattern for Souhbourne’s triumph.

At the Broadway green, Electric won on three rinks (77-71) against lowly Wessex. The leading lights for the Sparkies were Tony Gallagher, Noel Pennington, Brian Butler and Mike Elkins (21-17) with Trevor Smyth’s rink (18-15) collecting consolation points for Wessex.

Richmond Park find themselves just three points above the drop zone following their 10-4 loss at Pelhams. Dave Madgewick, Bernie Manton, Colin Cox and Bob Robins’s winning total of 27-16 proved vital in the final 75-73 tally.

SECTION THREE

THE top-of-the-table clash at Kings Park saw the hosts share rinks with Knyveton Gardens A. Dave Baxter’s four of Jeff Mann, John Lee and Adam Broome (36-15) swept the Gardeners to an unassailable 92-69 total. Ian Davies’s rink (18-15) led the resistance for Kings Park.

Poole Park A took advantage of Kings Park’s defeat and moved into second spot with a four-rink success over Iford Bridge. Richard Sawyer, Peter Martin, Derek Hawes and Peter Wilson (25-8) led the Lakesiders to a winning score of 93-59.

At the other end of the scale, Argyll and Highcliffe were locked in battle with the latter running out 10-4 winners. The best offering from Argyll came from Paul Debnam’s squad (22-13), but Brian Taylor, Brian Luker, David Grindon and Eric Snook (29-16) swung the match in Highcliffe’s favour with a 81-79 result.

Swanage returned home from Redhill Park with the dreaded nil points. Les Blackmore, Gordon Allen, Fred Wiseman and Eric Jones (32-16) spearheaded Redhill’s attack in their 87-63 whitewash of the visitors.

Derek Wild, Graham Conway, David Wanklin and Gary Menday (34-11) laid the foundation for Moordown’s 12-2 (95-60) win over Branksome Park A. Joe Staddon’s rink (23-21) rescued two points for the Squirrels.

SECTION FOUR

THE Swans soared into a 20-point lead at the head of the section by crushing New Milton A 13-1 at Swanmore Gardens, where host skip George Smith’s team of Eric Maidment, Roy Thompson and Terry Tuck devoured the opposition with a 28-16 return.

The visitors’ only point came after Bob Burns snatched a last end tie (15-15).

Christchurch recovered second place despite losing 8-6 to Boscombe Cliff B.

Ken Dean’s quartet (23-15) headed Priory’s three winning rinks, who failed to cover Cliff’s star turn of John Coles, Alan Greaves, Michael Drage and Derek Francis (34-16) whose 16th-end hot-shot proved to be decisive in the final 75-74 tally.

Milford’s Viv Bailey came home with two shots on the last end to win 20-19, but Bill Brydon’s rink of Michael May, John Cuff and Alan Goodwin (27-13) led hosts Wessex A to an overall 10-4 (81-72) triumph.

West Moors A are close behind Christchurch after picking up 10 points at home to Ferndown. Dixie Dean (20-16) was on target for the Stags, but Frank Partridge, Brian Burton, Peter Cookson and Eric Cook rustled up a 22-12 win to give the Moors a close 70-65 victory.

Braeside rinks headed by skips Peter Lloyd (38-3) and Pat Day (26-12) proved the best of three winning rinks (108-64) in their home encounter with Ringwood A. Peter Probin’s crew (27-13) salvaged two points for the Foresters.

SECTION FIVE

HIGHCLIFFE upset the form book with a three-rink win over leaders Poole Park (95-71). Alf Ford, Jeff Humphries, Ron Hazell and Peter Loffler (26-11) claimed top honours for Highcliffe, with Poole skip John Mullins’ efforts (23-20) earning two points for the Lakesiders.

Bournemouth A’s rollercoaster season continued with a 12-2 (97-74) drubbing of second-placed Kings Park A.

Colin Haynes, Maurice Little, Franco Tinelli and Malcolm Gray set the tone with a 38-20 win. Ray Williams (22-10) comfortably held on for King’s Park consolatory two points.

Branksome Park Squirrels returned to their dray with nothing after losing on all four rinks at Wimborne A (84-54). Wally Barker’s rink came closest for the visitors, going down 19-20.

Top scorers for the Minstermen were Bob Briggs, Denis King, Derek Geldart and Peter Laundon (24-11).

With no more than two shots separating any of the four rinks, Pelhams A will feel aggrieved at losing 11-3 (80-77) at Richmond Park A. Pelhams’ winning 22-21 rink was skipped by Les Pollard, whereas HQ’s top rink was Roger Drain’s team.

SECTION SIX

WITH Southbourne B stumbling at Ferndown, Swanmore A regained top spot after winning 10-4 (81-61) at Iford Bridge.

Peter Bunce, Mike Brunsdon, Bob Brown and Cambell Kinnon (30-6) proved to be the cornerstone of the Swans’ victory. Brian Packman’s crew topped the scoring for Iford Bridge with a 22-13 return.

Bob Thorne’s rink of Doug Rosson, Tony Calver and Derek Brown (26-9) cantered in for Ferndown, giving their team-mates the edge 10-4 (80-74) over Southbourne B’s best rink skipped by Larry Cox (29-16).

John Drake, Michael Barlow, Dennis Barton and Brian Atkinson (30-10) guided New Milton B to a 12-2 (88-69) triumph over Redhill Park A.

There was a ton for Lymington with John Bowler, Alan Gourley, Les Ford and Brian Marchant (33-13) heading three winning rinks 12-2 (100-64) against third-place Wimborne B.

Southbourne C slumped to bottom place after their 10-4 (93-54) home defeat by Argyll A.
