Cliff on a high after New Milton victory

BOSCOMBE Cliff, although depleted by Middleton Cup demands, still overcame New Milton on three rinks in Section One. Peter Wooller (16-16) denied the Cliff a maximum with a last-end leveller. A shuffled pack saw Ron Sparks, John Cave, Stuart Trees and David Halliday (22-13) spearhead Cliff’s 13-1 (88-70) victory.

Alexandra Park’s Mike Stapleton earned a last-end tie against Paul Spetch (18-18), but this, added to Alex’s two winning rinks, still failed to cover Chris Weeke’s quartet (28-11), earning Poole a 9-5 (82-79) win.

At the Minster, visitors Knyveton Gardens were crushed 92-63 by Wimborne. Tony Mendes, Mike Connett, Dave and Brian Shepherd (25-12) spearheaded the 12-2 win for the hosts.

Branksome Park looked home and dry at Ringwood until Leon Pope picked up six shots on the last end to win his rink 20-14 and the match for the Foresters 12-2 (76-75). Eric Knight, Barrie Seymour, Roy Leake and Derek Faulkner (23-17) top-scored in Ringwood’s success.

Despite winning two rinks, Bournemouth lost out 87-84 in a close finish at Meyrick Park, where Brian Burton, John March, Syd Chandler and John Riddington (24-17) led West Moors to a 10-4 triumph.

SECTION TWO

SOUTHBOURNE remain in top spot despite losing 12-2 (86-67) at Braeside. Chris Dowding’s quartet salvaged two points for the visitors as Ian Cameron, Mike Beard, Peter Knight and Colin Moss (23-14) proved the pick of the Carpetbaggers’ winning rinks.

There was another three-rink win at Lymington, where Ken Carter, John Kitcher, Vernon Cox and Ken Streak (23-17) spurred the hosts to an 80-73 win over Pelhams. John Watts (22-16) denied the Lymos a maximum haul.

A weakened Boscombe Cliff B outfit lost 14-0 at Southbourne, with Malcolm Laird, Peter Heaney, Keith Aldridge and John Mann (28-13), backed up by Brian Sadler’s squad, leading the Tower Men’s onslaught.

Richmond Park’s meter was left on empty after Electric returned home with maximum points. Sparkie skips Mike Elkins (27-20) and Steve Hack (20-13) shared the honours in contributing to the final tally of 87-62.

Wessex man Trevor Smyth’s quartet (28-14) was surpassed by the two winning rinks of Fordingbridge (72-69), with Ken Guest, Ken Owen, Tim Westbury and Roy Moretti (23-12) claiming top honours for the Turks.

SECTION THREE

NEWLY-promoted Knyveton Gardens A took over at the top after a 12-2 (87-62) victory over Redhill Park.

Terry Davis, Trevor Smith, Bob Osler and Peter Dorey (28-12) sparkled for the home team, while Redhill’s Barry Sturgess (18-17) hung on to deny the Gardeners a maximum haul.

Poole Park A returned from the Purbecks with 12 points after turning over Swanage 96-59. Chris Evripidou, Norman Austin, Barry Higgins and John Moody (33-11) inflicted the most pain on the hosts, for whom Ron Emmitt’s quartet (22-11) rescued two points. Iford Bridge defenders Chris Quick, Barry Short, John Bishop and Colin Lakey (29-6) spurred on their team-mates to a 12-2 (88-56) triumph over last week’s leaders Moordown. Gary Menday’s squad (23-11) provided the only solace for the visitors.

Argyll notched up their first win by overcoming Kings Park on their own green 10-4 (77-73), with Don Hawkins, Eric Griffin, Paul Debnam and Mal Clarke (25-18) top-scoring for the West Cliff Club. Vernon Dillon’s troops (20-11) led the home challenge.

Highcliffe also recorded a double-rink away win at Branksome Park A. Highcliffe’s Graham Stride, Brian Taylor, Ernie Thorne and Eric Snook (28-10) covered the Squirrels’ best effort – Joe Staddon’s 31-15.

SECTION FOUR

SWANMORE moved into pole position after winning on three rinks at Milford-on-Sea. Home skip Viv Bailey held on at 19-18 to deny the visitors a capacity haul. Eric Maidment, Roy Thompson, Terry Tuck and George Smith (22-10) claimed top honours in Swanmore’s (85-62) success.

Last week’s leaders Christchurch lost out 11-3 (96-84) in a high-scoring match at New Milton. Richard Silcock, Derek Handscombe, Keith Young and Ray Green (32-14) were the leading lights for New Milton.

Shared rinks at Ferndown finished with Wessex A ahead 10-4 on match points. Dixie Dean’s rink top-scored for the hosts (25-19) but this was more than covered by Alan Brittain, Jack Thornton, John Bentall and Alan Godwin (22-11), the main contributors to the Wessex winning score of 82-66.

Hosts West Moors A trounced Braeside 92-61, with Jim Garrett’s posse of Frank Partridge, Denis Halford and Mike Briggs (29-13) marshalling the West Moors team to a 13-1 victory.

Boscombe Cliff B suffered a sixth successive defeat, this time 10-4 at the hands of Ringwood A.

SECTION FIVE

POOLE Park B’s unbeaten start perished when, despite winning on three rinks, they still stumbled to an 8-6 (70-90) defeat at the hands of Wimborne A. Howard Patch (19-16) topped the Lakesiders’ efforts, which failed to cover the mammoth 33-8 amassed by John Gibbons, Malcolm Bray, Alan Hughes and Percy Swinson for the Minstermen.

West Moors B were comprehensively beaten 81-65 at Pelhams A. The sole success for the visitors came from Peter Brown’s rink (18-15), while Bob Goodman’s gang of Bernie Morton, Cyril Lee and Charlie Loader (23-14) were the pick of Pelhams’ three successful rinks.

Bournemouth A kept up with the pace after their 12-2 (85-77) win at Highcliffe A. Phil Riggs, John Davidson, Bill Sadler and Bert Mitchell (27-21) claimed top honours for Bournemouth. Southbourne B proved to be the only away winners in this section, returning from Argyll A 11-3 victors. Their star performers John Morgan, Brian Harris, Ivor Goodman and Des Cordes (29-16) paved the way for the 85-73 win.

At Redhill Park, Gerry Dixon, Brian Walters, Brian Openshaw and Bob Dixon (29-10) spearheaded a 12-2 (94-62) onslaught of visiting Ferndown A. Ray Milner’s squad (21-15) spared Ferndown’s blushes.

Wimborne B completed a daily treble for the club after winning a close match against Iford Bridge 10-4 (64-62). Phil White’s foursome (18-13) top-scored for Wimborne, as did Paul Oakden (19-16) for Iford.

Iford lost 25 per cent on two rinks after starting the day’s action two players short. This resulted in them losing the match overall.

Southbourne’s C team had a comfortable 10-4 (85-68) victory over Lymington A.

  • Last week the Echo reported that an Alexandra Park player collapsed on the green and was very poorly in hospital.

That player was Alex McGregor, and the Echo is pleased to reveal that Mr McGregor is making good progress.

Captain Richard Cake said: “Alex is conscious and has been making conversation – even talking about the game.”
