Sunseekers sail to Nicholas Read Cup win

LAST season’s beaten finalists Sunseekers returned to Hurn Bridge to lift the MA Hart Nicholas Read Cup after a 1-0 victory over Hayward Sunday League Division Seven championship rivals LV FC.

David Webb’s first-half goal was all that separated the sides but the key factor in Sunseekers’ success was undoubtedly the magnificent performance by their goalkeeper Andy Saunders who denied LV with a series of brilliant saves.

Sunseekers had the better of the early play, with LV struggling to settle, and a defensive slip let in Luke Morrell, but LV goalkeeper Ben Sullivan was quickly off his line to block.

Webb scored what was to be the decisive goal for Sunseekers after 28 minutes.

The tall central defender rose to meet a corner from the right at the near post and his glancing header eluded Sullivan and the covering defenders on the goal line.

LV responded a few minutes later but Kam Tinker’s blistering shot from the edge of the box was pushed over by Saunders.

Saunders again denied Tinker moments later, before Graeme Rose’s header flashed wide of Saunders’ upright just after the restart.

Tinker did have the ball in the back of the Sunseekers net on the hour, clipping it neatly over Saunders, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

LV were reduced to 10 men three minutes from time when Rose was given his marching orders and Sunseekers should have doubled their tally, but Mark Poole dragged his shot wide of the far post.

• The Trophyman of Southampton man of the match, chosen by BDFA President Mike Fowler, was Sunseekers goalkeeper Andy Saunders.

• The Leading Goalscorer award went to Kam Tinker of LV FC who scored eight goals in the competition.
