NEIL Pidgley grabbed the winner with virtually the last kick of the match to give the Hayward Sunday XI the verdict 3-2 in an entertaining BFA Memorial Trophy match against the Hayward Saturday XI at Dean Court.
In a fitting tribute to Marc Burrows, the hugely-popular Christchurch FC player who sadly passed away earlier this year, the Hayward Saturday XI wore a kit that had been presented to West Moors FC by Marc.
The shirts had the name ‘Buzz’ emblazed on the back which was Marc’s nickname.
The Sunday XI started brightly with Craig Leverton looking dangerous up front and it took an excellent save from Saturday XI goalkeeper Garry Mowlam to prevent them taking the lead.
It was the Saturday side who took the lead after 17 minutes though with a superb shot from 18 yards by Andy Savage.
Tom Brown was carried off on a stretcher with suspected ligament damage in the 38th minute and the Saturday XI suffered another blow two minutes later when Leverton put the Sunday side on level terms, latching onto a diagonal ball and sliding it under the keeper.
The Sunday XI went ahead three minutes into the second half when Mark Taylor’s free kick was headed in by Neil Smith.
Mowlam came out well to deny Leverton on the hour and the Saturday XI equalised with a stunning goal in the 70th minute.
Stylish midfielder Stuart Ellis played a neat square ball inside to Andy Munson whose terrific 30-yard effort rocketed into the net, giving goalkeeper Aaron Wyeth no chance.
Both teams went in search of a winner with Taylor drilling a shot just wide and both goalkeepers making good saves.
Referee Dave Pickles was about to put the whistle to his lips to blow for time when the ball came over from the right and Pidgley steered it past the keeper.
The Child Trophies ‘Man of the Match’, chosen by BFA President Mike Fowler was Stuart Ellis of the Hayward Saturday XI.
