Cherries: We're stronger than ever says Tindall

BRIEFING: Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall talk to the media on Saturday BRIEFING: Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall talk to the media on Saturday

HAILING from Mile End, deep in London’s East End, Jason Tindall could have been forgiven for feeling like a jellied eel out of water surrounded by the rolling hills of Lancashire.

Having rejected overtures from both Charlton, his boyhood club, and Crystal Palace on Tuesday, January 11 2011, Tindall and boss Eddie Howe found themselves heading up the M6 to Burnley less than a week later, as one of the most successful periods in Cherries’ recent history was brought to a close.

For Tindall, wife Claudine and children Sienna and Levi, the beaches of Dorset were replaced by the often grey skies and misty rain of Hale, Cheshire.

“It opens your eyes to a different way of life,” admitted the 34-year-old in an interview with the Echo this week.

“And one thing I would say is that I met some fantastic people in Burnley and where we lived. They made us feel so welcome and I have nothing but good things to say about our experiences up there and the people we met along the way.

“We lived in a nice area and the school was fantastic. Now the family has to do it all again back in Bournemouth, but I guess they are coming back home so that makes it easier for them.

“My little boy is fantastic and he is glued to me whenever I am at home and my little girl has picked up a few northern words from school and brought them home!

“But my kids mean everything to me and coming back here is great for them.

“It’s another chapter in their lives as much as it is in mine.

“When you are in football you have to deal with what is put in front of you. You can’t guarantee where you are going to be from one year to the next, so, in that sense, the only difference we found was probably the climate! It was a lot colder up there and seemed to rain a lot!

“That affects your mood from day to day, but I don’t feel I have changed as a person because of living up there.

“But my wife is a Bournemouth girl and perhaps it was harder for her moving away from home. She did, though, and she did fantastically in terms of building a life for herself up there.

“She made a lot of friends and my kids settled into a fantastic school. They made huge strides and, although it was different, so many good things have come from it.”

Less than two years since upping sticks, Tindall and Howe returned on Saturday to a rapturous welcome, with Dean Court a far cry from the dissent and disdain that followed the defeat to Walsall two weeks ago.

And while Tindall admitted the pair’s second coming felt “like we’d never been away”, the club that reopened its doors to arguably the most successful management duo in its history is a very different place to the one they left behind in 2011.

Speaking following their first training session yesterday, Tindall added: “A lot has changed since we have been away and certainly for the better, but it was a good first day and an opportunity to meet the lads.

“There are a lot of new players here now and it gave us a good chance to have a chat with the majority of them, get to know them and them us.

“We want to get things sorted as quickly as possible but it’s the first couple of days and our decisions will be made over the coming weeks.

“We have a big squad which we have to look at and make decisions on and certainly over the next couple of weeks we will be doing that. We’ll be looking at everyone individually and making decisions on what we see and then we’ll take it from there.

“It’s a similar situation in some respects as the club was in the bottom four when Eddie and I took over before, so we do have to hit the ground running and that’s what we intend to do. From what everyone has been saying, our appointment seemed to give everyone at lift at the weekend and the crowd was fantastic. You could see the difference they made.

“Our intention is to pick up results quickly because there is a good squad here that has probably under-achieved. That is something we want to put right as quickly as possible.

“We’re 100 per cent focused on what we want to achieve here now. You won’t find two more ambitious people than myself and Ed and our relationship is just what it always has been. We’re really tight.

“We talk about everything and we have a great working relationship. I think we’ve become stronger and better for our experiences.”

  • Meanwhile, Howe last night confirmed coach Dennis Rofe had left the club.

Rofe had been in charge for Cherries' past two games following Paul Groves's departure as manager.

Howe told the Echo: "There is no hard feelings with Dennis. But myself and Jason work better as a duo."

Howe getting rid of Rofe is, I'm hoping, an example of him being allowed to do it his own way.

The work has already started, it has to be done the way the manager wants or it will never work!!! Hopefully the benefits of Howes experience will be there for us all to see on Saturday, what a statement that would be if we could pull of the win, great game to have first up for Eddie and Jason, the fans will go through the roof if we can beat Tranmere!!

No reason at all why we can't beat Tranmere at home. Players must be up for it with Eddie and Jason calling the shots now. I just hope we can get Wes back here when his loan at Pompey is up - oh yes, and sort out the central defenders pronto - UTC!

What a great achievement by the board to get this pair back at the club. Our supporters now have great expectations but I believe have also the common sense not to expect too much to quickly. If Eddy and Jason are to succeed then they definitely need the terraces to get behind the team week in and week out. We have a West Ham style tradition at Bournemouth that was introduced firstly by John Bond and carried forward by Sir Harry Redknapp and I am hopeful that our new manager and his assistant will reintroduce to the fans, especially the younger ones who may not have experienced the size of crowds that we used to get along with the noise that they used to make. I feel really excited by whats happening at the club and sincerely hope that everyone will now get behind the club as a whole, get off the back of those they dont like, remove any bad feeling and help to push our team forwards and hopefully upwards!

I so nearly binned it. This appointment was beyond expectation. All of a sudden I'm enthused by it all again. Sat was amazing. The continual chanting of Eddie Howe's Barmy Army , the players responding and the North Stand once again sucking the ball into the back of the net! Good times ahead wherever we finish this year. Can't wait for Sat and it's been a while since I said that!

It's hugely encouraging to have these two back. They rebuilt the club at every level last time around so it took a special kind of recklessness to squander all of that but credit to the board for recognising their mistakes.

I wonder if Tindall realises that it rained a lot over the whole country this year?

Credit Demin certainly. Mitchell STILL wants Groves/Brooks as part of the setup, am seriously concerned about rumours regarding "Brown envelopes" but hope Howe/Tindall won't stand for any nonsense and stamp their authority in ALL areas including Young Tom, any problems I hope they have a word in Maxim's shell like and let him sort it out. There is much to do in all quarters, but feel sure if anyone is going to sort it, Howe will with Tindall's undoubted help/support. Saturday can't come soon enough, if the players thought last Saturday was loud, I've got a message for them, you ain't heard nothing yet, I know it can be much louder and it will!!!

I think Dennis Rofe can consider himself unlucky to lose his job, but I can understand that Eddie Howe and Jason Tindall are hands on coaches and need to do the job as a team, but I trust Mr Mitchell will forget his desire to keep Paul Groves and Shaun Brookes on the payroll, do not try and rectify one mistake by creating another, no new manager want or needs the former manager looking over his shoulder, plus all the curent backroom staff seem to be doing a reasonable job, why move anyone sideways or create new positions to satisfy these people

I think we may find that Brooks will stay with us. My reason for this is nothing to do with his reltionship to EM. I have spoken to players who have worked with him and they all rate him as a coach but also addmit he couldn't manage players. As for PG, I have heard very little about him. I also am lead to believe that JT rates SB as a coach. This information is from mates of mine that worked on JT's house 3 yearsago.
Having said all that I am pretty sure that the Dynamic Duo have the final say on all football matters. Guess we will never know the whole truth.
Just can't wait till Sat. Come on you REDS.

If we have the size of crowd we should have and we sing like we did on Saturday, then the fans will make a big difference, it was the difference on Saturday after a dull first half, so more of the signing we had then and we should get something out of the game!!

I have only met Eddie Howe once and he was a tad miserable then...but maybe it was a bad day?
All that matters is that we have a manager with experience to try and guide us back to the top of this League and I am happy for that.
I am looking forward to Saturday and the beginning of hopefully some good times and football entertainment to return to Dean Court

Dear Mr Nonno.

Regarding Mr Pugh -Yes he is still with us. Unfortunately, he wants Championship football. He will now go at the end of the season. I find it very surprising that he is still with us.
.
Due to us having now played too many games, the chances of us getting promoted this season have now passed us by. So Mr Pugh will not sign another contract to play another season in League One next season.
.
Ref the Howe appointment - Yes thank the lord for an experienced manager!! and so one cannot complain. But at what cost to the club financially - I suppose we will never know.
.
The one reservation I have is that most of Eddies success with us the first time he was here was built on the fact that he already knew, worked and played with most of the players that were here at the time and they played for him.
.
He has now inherited a completly different set of players and that takes time to get the best out of them and play the way he wants them to play. So another transitionary period awaits us.
.
Hence no promotion for this season I am afraid.
.
Hence my predictions - i believe that I am right more times than I am wrong. Unfortunatly that is. I believe that one individual has already sided with me on this in answering one of your posts.
.
Another thing is that the only reason why the club want to employ Groves and Brooks within the youth policy is to avoid paying their contracts as that will cost the club a pretty penny!!!
.
I still believe in what Groves was trying to do, but unfortunatly he ran out of time. I still believe that he could manage in the Championship successfully given the time that is !.

prediction for Saturday is opened ended.
AFCB 1 Tranmere1.
.
Or I belive whoever scores first will win.

I`ve heard from a pretty reliable source that PG and SBs`contracts have been paid up,and as their previous contracts have been terminated,re-employ
ing them in the youth set-up would therefore entail a new contract.
Oh,by the way SB`s pay off -£160k.

Shouldn't take too long! I'll give them about another 6 months. Then we'll see if all their "stars" stay with them or jump ship, having had a taste of PL football. Hopefully, Lallana will be first to go, and we'll be quids in!

You always get a better atmosphere in a Terraced stadium and when I first went to Dean Court it was 20,000+ 99% male too. The 29,500 record gate was againt the Busby Babes - what an atmosphere that day. But those days are gone and we now have all the constraints of an all seater stadium. Such a pity that we can't complete the ground with a Terrace at the South End - using the German system they use to get round FIFA's rules. Standing for League games - sitting for FIFA games. With the South End competing with the North End for noise and passion. There is a strong movement to allow some safe terracing at grounds, can only hope that it is successful.

SMHINTO I think for the most part of your post you make some good observations and whilst we may differ in some of the points you make they are nevertheless fairly balanced.

However as it has already been pointed out you leave your bow door wide open for an exocet to be rammed through without any problems. Because whatever the result it would make you correct, and on that basis you lose a lot of credibility.

Thank you for refraining from calling me names I am sure come end of April/May we may well return to your prediction but for the time being lets enjoy what is ahead of us hopefully some good football when EH and JT find the right formula.

Kind regards

Well Mr SMHinto the reason Mr Pugh is still with us is quite simple. No club in the championship has ever come in for him, not even Burnley under EH regime. He is a league 1 player (avery good one mind) and that's that. If he runs his contract down does he imagine there will be a queue of championship clubs waiting for him ?
.
As for the rest of your post I must agree with pretty much all of it apart from the comments about PG. You were having a laugh weren't you. Perhaps you can enlighten us as to what PG was trying to do, because I don't think he knows !

Those who have never stood on the Terraces don't know what they are missing. We should have choice!
SOC, just for the record, the attendance at the Man U game was 28,799 and the gate receipts were £3,370. 1s 0d.

JONTEE I am going to have a shot at this prediction lark. First of all I predict that we will be playing with a round ball, secondly I predict that the team who puts the ball in the opposition’s goal most times will win the game and the three points and most importantly I predict that the Pope is a catholic. Take the bones out of that one SMHINTO!!!

Disagree mate. We never replaced Bartley (along with EH & JT clearly). The main reason why we fell away into obscurity. I'd have him back in a heart beat. Quality in midfield.

Ings, i agree.

I'm pleased EH is about to trim the squad numbers. We had 4 1st teamers at Winchester today Jal, McDermott,Bowles & Zubar, there's only 2 of them I'd keep and Jal is not one of 'em. Several out on loan too.
The disquiet in the Dressing Room is brought about by many of the lads not knowing when their next game will be, and it's games that make them 'sharp' Pughie is despondent because of the famous diamond formation not needing a winger. You can see how happiness and confidence affected him on Sat...say no more!

Thank you for correcting me, seemed like more there at the time. Now you have me trying to remember how much I paid for my late Wife and I to stand in the New Stand - it was certainly more than two shillings though. Think that the receipts were more than £3,370. 1s - surely £33,000 +? .
