Cherries: Howe relishing new challenge (updated with video)

WELCOME HOME: Eddie Howe talks to the media at Dean Court this lunchtime WELCOME HOME: Eddie Howe talks to the media at Dean Court this lunchtime

EDDIE Howe says he is relishing the challenge of trying to revive Cherries’ fortunes after returning to “a very different club”.

Howe will officially be unveiled as Cherries’ new manager ahead of today’s League One clash with Leyton Orient at Goldsands Stadium.

The 34-year-old and assistant Jason Tindall will sign three-and-a-half year contracts after compensation was finally agreed with Burnley for their services yesterday.

Howe and Tindall, also 34, left Dean Court for Turf Moor 21 months ago after presiding over one of the most successful periods in Cherries’ recent history.

The pair overcame severe financial hardship at the club to play a leading role in preserving its Football League status in 2009 before masterminding promotion just 12 months later.

Since their departure, the club’s on-field fortunes have dipped and the duo return with Cherries in the League One drop zone despite vast investment in the squad in the past 12 months.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo this morning, Howe said: “We are both really excited to be back and it is a great challenge for us to take on. Everyone knows the feelings we both have for the club.

“Everything is very different – the infrastructure, the resources and the expectations – and there will be a lot to take in over a short period of time. We know everyone will have to work very hard to improve the league position but we can’t wait to get started.

“Although our focus has been very much with Burnley over the past couple of years, it seems to have been a transitional period for Bournemouth. Having resources behind you presents a different challenge and I am aware of the potential pitfalls.

“It will be up to us to build a team and all our previous success was down to having team spirit and an identity. Although there will be some familiar faces to us, in some respects, we are starting afresh.

“We have to get the side performing as a team and working for one another. That will be the challenge we face and I am confident we can do it.

“We are certainly not underestimating the task in front of us. We have to improve results and we have to do it quickly. The record this season is reflected in the league position so we have a lot of work to do. But, with the group of players we have got, I am confident we can succeed.

“Regardless of what finances you have behind you, nobody will give you anything in football. There are some good clubs in this league and we respect the division. It is going to take a lot of hard work to achieve our aims and we will need everybody pulling in the same direction, the players, the staff and the supporters.”

Howe, father to 14-month-old son Harry, cited his family as one of his reasons for leaving Burnley. However, he was quick to scotch suggestions he lacked ambition after dropping back into League One from the Championship.

He added: “My ambition and desire to succeed are the same as they have always been. Jason and myself have not come back to settle for second best. We want to push on and bring try to bring success to Bournemouth. That is our only focus at the moment and it will never change.

“I have never been one to worry about what other people think. The outside world can think what it wants in terms of stepping down a division. I know what the job entails and I know what the objective is. We are both focused on achieving that goal.”

Howe said it was “too early” for him to discuss publicly his plans for his squad and backroom staff and said he would spend next week assessing all areas of the club.

I have no doubt with Eddie Howe in charge we will be in the top 2 next season.
I remember how we used to sing
"We are going up" when we were 1 point behind Brighton and every match was exciting regardless of winning or losing.

Blimey I never thought that would happen!
What a great move for the club.
Can't wait for our season to get started now. It would be great if we could make the play offs, I think that would be a bonus though as I still can't see us finishing any more than mid table after such a poor sart.
It'll be interesting to see Eddie's line up, Fletch may even get a game.
Up the Cherries!

Now that's a manager with a plan, great to have you back!! Already you can see the difference in the way he talks, fills you with confidence and not dread! It will be facinating to see the team he picks out of all these players, they will have to work hard now, no more getting away with second best!!

You always know what your going to get with Eddie, which is why he is so popular. Mid table would be fine this season, but I'd not be surprised if we don't sneak into the Play Off's, much still to play for. The supporters must play their part now and fill DC... Can't wait, SO excited about my football again!!

I was looking at a web site in France this morning and was intrigued to see half a dozen postings re the Cherries and Eddies return - our fans are everywhere and clearly good news travels fast, at least two promising to be at Dean Court next Saturday. Just a small indication of the buzz that his return is bringing. Brilliant move by the Board. But, don't expect too much too soon, Eddie will be fair to all the players on the books and give them the opportunity to shew what they are about, before starting to build a team, but there are a lot of them to assess and this process will take time.

Welcome home Eddie, it's been a hard time since you left, you have lifted not just the club but the whole town by returning. Home is where the heart is & i think your heart was always in Bournemouth, this is where you belong, you are one of us & apart from a couple of walley's we will be 100% behind you & the team. Expectations will be high but if we all pull together we will get there in the end no doubt about it. As for Mitchell & co i have to admit you have gone a long way to rebuilding some bridges with the fans. As one of Mitchell's fiercest critics i am willing to draw a line in the sand now & move on. Now is the time to stop all the infighting & unite as one and get behind the team, Mitchell has made some huge mistakes but has gone out on a limb to bring Eddie home & i applaud him for that. Try & keep a low profile mr Mitchell coz we are only interested in OUR football club not you & your family. Best of luck to Eddie & his team, go for it.!!!!. UTCIAD

I for one would never apologise!!! It's only down to Demin that Eddie Howe is back, I have said already Mitchell did extremely well in negotiating his return, but he is still a leach, that hasn't changed. But the football takes centre stage now, Demin will decide what happens from now on, I believe he is calling the shots. So apologise?? you must be joking LOL

with Maxim shelling out so much dosh to bring them both back, it beggars the question what funds is he going to be prepared to make available?? although that said, I do believe we have a very good squad, we just needed a manager to manage.... Perhaps Marvin though :)

Totally agree. Unfortunately, I think you'll have a hard time convincing certain fans, particularly on this website. If Eddie Mitchell and Eddie Howe's relationship was as fractured as some people would have you believe, then it doesn't matter how much money Denim offered Burnley because Howe would have just said no thanks. Yes, there are other factors involved but let's face it, if we reached the Premiership people would still complain about Mitchell! I say well done to everyone involved and let's get behind the team.

Very impressed with the interview Neil Perrit had with Eddie this morning.Eddie and Jason know all the problems and how to handle them, which is why their return has brought so much joy to the supporters. They have have now gained valuable experience of management at a higher level which bodes well for when A.F.C.B reach their longed for targets.
Confidence in one's ability to bring the best out of the players in the squad, and improve the all important team spirit. We know from past experience that Eddie and Jason can do that, and given time they will achieve their aims and our much loved club will reap the benefits.

Eddie Howe's barmy army !!!!!
It’s Saturday afternoon,
The clocks ticking it’s almost 3,
We are singing Eddie Howe's barmy army
All a sudden there’s a big cheer,
11 men come running out.
Wearing red and black,
1st Charlie, 2nd Mac , Then Pugh
It’s the mighty Cherries
The ref blows his whistle,
Charlie kicks the ball to Pugh
Pugh runs with the ball down the pitch,
Passes 1 player,
Passes 2 players.
He passes the ball to Mattie ,
He shoots, He scores,
It’s 1: 0 to the mighty Cherries
The crowed jumps out of their seats,
With a mighty roar! Eddie Howe's Barmy army
With 1 second to go,
Pugh has the ball,
He shoots, He scores,
Its 2: 0 the ref blows his whistle,
Cherries win again.
The game is over ,
What a shame,
But I know I’ll be watching the next game,
Next week I’ll be here again,
Watching the Cherries win again!

Thanks for the welcome. Would it not be the icing on the cake if in the not to distant future both clubs was to play each other in THE PREMIERSHIP.
Good luck for this season.
Stranger things could happen, Eddie Howe could come home!!! Hang on, he did LOL...

Good luck gents if anyone can get us there you can, try and get a bit of money back by flogging Addisson in Jan (if not just give him away) a captain he will never be. I can see us making the playoffs and dont write Fletch off as scoring the goal that gets us there. And good luck to Bradders as well with his new team, when you think of the last two he weren't that bad. Eddie what about a straight swap we'll have Bartley back they can have young Tom on work experience
