Cherries: Barnard delighted to silence Pompey boo boys

Bournemouth Echo: GOAL: Lee Barnard celebrates making it 1-1 at Fratton Park GOAL: Lee Barnard celebrates making it 1-1 at Fratton Park

LEE Barnard admitted he had relished his hostile Fratton Park reception as he had the last laugh by silencing the Pompey boo boys.

Cherries loan star Barnard headed home a debut effort 12 minutes from time to cancel out Izale McLeod’s strike and earn a 1-1 opening-day draw.

The 28-year-old Southampton striker converted a Simon Francis cross to spoil the party for crisis-hit Portsmouth at a raucous Fratton Park.

Barnard confessed the goal had been “a little bit sweeter” as it came after his Saints link had seen him jeered by a vociferous home crowd.

Speaking to the media post-match, he said: “It is all part of the fun and I don’t take it to heart. I thought it was a great atmosphere and I enjoyed it.

“I don’t need extra motivation – I am eager to play and just want to do well – but getting a bit of stick always makes you think you have got to keep them quiet. And, thankfully, I got the goal.

“Being from Southampton, it made it a little bit sweeter against Pompey with the stick I was getting.

“But it was just great to score for Bournemouth and get a vital point. It was a good start and I think we can build on it.”

Barnard’s equaliser saved Cherries from defeat against stricken Pompey – who had signed a team from scratch on Thursday amid serious financial and off-field problems.

Barnard said: “It is really sad to see them in this situation and I hope they pull through.

“Even though there is a rivalry with Southampton, it doesn’t matter. I am a football fan and don’t want to see Portsmouth go under.”

Signed on loan until January 1, Barnard was registered just in time to feature against Saints’ fierce local rivals.

Despite only meeting his new team-mates hours before the League One clash, the former Southend frontman made an immediate impact.

A proven goalscorer, Barnard is likely to get plenty of game-time at Goldsands Stadium with Frank Demouge, Josh McQuoid and Charlie Sheringham all sidelined through injury.

“I am here to play some games, score some goals and do well for Bournemouth,” said Barnard.

“I had a bad season last season through injury and missed a lot of football. I am just pleased to come to a good club that play good football.”

turning back the clock isnt always the best way to go - i think it is generally acknowledged that rednapp started the rot at ths club.
I definately dont believe that the club is in good hands now with groves and brookes, they were a cost efficent option at the time that bradbury was pushed out, but thats not a reason to take them forward when frankly they have no credibility.
the cracks have been visible for some time and football management is a very bad place to get it wrong,i dont think many of us are convinced that this will be a good season and against pompeys cobbled together team we did not perform and that must not be ignored

Harry may know how to spend money, but he always gets results and most of his signings are money well spent. It's up to those managing the finances who should say no if he's over spending. Agree Groves needs to be given a chance, it's Mitchell's decision whether we like it or not. However the clocks ticking and if results don't happen EM must act and act fast!!!

Granted we were no great shakes against Oxford, even though they sat in which gave us no room to counter, we looked devoid of creative guile in midfield. Teams will sit back against us this year so we need someone who can unlock defences and give us that little bit extra, maybe o'kane or Macdonald could provide us with that. One thing is glaringly obvious though and it's the fact that Groves hasn't once in pre-season put out a settled formation, his preferred 11. I would like to see us play (where possible) the same starting X1 just to get some consistency. Now, as for HR back to AFCB? Would pompey have him back? I think we all know the answer to that and no amount of rose tinted views of yester -year would make me want ‘arry back on the reigns. Yes we played some decent stuff with players we could ill-afford , however we also played some dross , usually away from home ( 5-0 against a poor grimsby side) still wrangles as does Gerry Peyton in the same game telling the fans F*** off!! Ok I’ve digressed slightly

Barnard was quality Sat. 100% effort, defended from the front and looked dangerous on the ball every time. How typical was it then that every chance appeared to fall to Thomas who unsurprisingly failed to deliver yet again. I watched him warming up and he missed or had every shot saved by our sub goalie. I'd like to think Barnard and mcQuoid when fit will be our no 1 pairing but for now PG, starting Tues, Thomas must warm the bench and please give Tubbs or Grabban a chance. Midfield poor Sat. Simply not good enough and why is Zubar not partnering Addison? That's why Addison was poor. He was unsure partnered with Elphick.

I think when the headline mentioned 'boo boys' this was directed at the Portsmouth fans and not AFCB who have seem to turn this comment forum into a bashing excuse.

For me an away is a good start. Yes it is very well documented that Portsmouth fielded a team of 11 plus new players but so too are Bournemouth in a transitional stage. I for one think this is a strong AFCB team and I hope I am not wrong in putting faith in the management.

Get behind the team! I see too many people on here wanting sunshine and moaning about the heat... SHOW SOME SUPPORT, its is only one game!

I am inclined to agree, once again we have gone for the cheap option. It is amazing how we have brought in quality players and not quality manager. However, if I had the choice between Bradbury and Groves then Groves would win every time.

I believe the approacH of passing football undEr Groves and I would be prepared to give him 10 to 15 games. If there is no reasonable improvement then we will need to make a change.

Crawley must have thought they had won the Euromillions when us silly burks put an lledged 800k on th table. Off load him at the earliest opportunity for a reasonable fee and cut our losses.[/p][/quote]Don't quite get that. The guy (tubbs) hasnt had the best of starts but that's mainly down to injury. People suggesting Harry should return - doubt Ed would sanction that move - ought to remember why Harry left in the first place. He had been in a horrific car accident with Brian who sadly was killed, then spent a long time himself in hospital. It was considered at the time that Harry would probably not be fit enough to continue football management and was given a generous pay-off by AFCB standards.
The rest as they say is history.

Sad personal story aside, Redknapp is not the kind of manager you want - he likes to spend and spend big which is one of the many reasons Portsmouth are where they are.
The Cherries would be better off building slowly but surely under lesser managers before moving onto the Championship, consolidating again and then going for the big time.

sound financial base is everything, then your ground and then your squad - you won't survive in the big time unless you've got the ground to cope with it.
