London 2012: Lush keen for trio to carry on sailing
7:00am Friday 10th August 2012 in Sport
ANNIE Lush reflected on the match race girls’ Olympic campaign and insisted London 2012 would not be the end of the Poole trio.
‘MacLush’ were yesterday denied the chance to secure a fifth-placed finish in the Elliott 6m class after a lack of breeze caused yesterday’s matches to be called off in Weymouth.
After being controversially eliminated in Wednesday’s quarter-final against Russia, Lush, Lucy Macgregor and Kate Macgregor were yesterday due to meet France in the fifth-to-eighth-place sail-off.
But, along with the men’s 470 medal race, the trio were, ironically, forced off the water by the beautiful weather above Weymouth’s Nothe course.
Despite being denied the chance of a final flourish on home waters, though, Lush was adamant she would again sail alongside sisters Lucy and Kate.
Lush said last night: “It wasn’t sailable in the end. We tried but the wind hasn’t settled down all day.
“At least the three of us got to be out there, but it’s a shame we didn’t get to do a final race together as we were really looking forward to that. I’m sure it won’t be the end, though.”
Yesterday’s abandonment meant the Brits ended their campaign in seventh position – their ranking from the round robin phase with which they progressed through to the quarter-finals.
Lucy Macgregor added: “It was a bit of a shame. Despite initially not wanting to go sailing after yesterday’s dramas, when we actually got on to the water we really wanted to go racing to try and get that fifth spot. It was disappointing to have hung around on the water and not had the chance to finish on a bit more of a high.”
