POOLE sailing stars Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor suffered Olympics heartache in the Elliott 6m match racing quarter-finals this afternoon.

The trio lost their five-race series 3-2 against the Russian crew of Ekaterina Skudina, Elena Syuzeva and Elena Oblova on home waters in Weymouth.

Level at one apiece overnight, the Team GB triumvirate won the first race of the day to move in front.

But the home racers, dubbed ‘MacLush’, then narrowly missed out on an overall 3-1 victory when Russia edged ahead to claim a comeback win in a photo finish.

With the scores level at 2-2, that forced a deciding clash.

And despite leading for much of the contest, the Daily Echo columnists were beaten as Russia finished strongly.

That result saw Russia stay in the hunt for a medal as they qualified for the semi-finals, with ‘Maclush’ now going into the fifth-eighth place sail-off.
