ANTON Robinson's proposed move to Huddersfield Town gathered pace overnight, with the midfielder set to talk personal terms with Cherries' League One rivals this weekend.

Chairman Eddie Mitchell on Wednesday rejected an initial offer for the 25-year-old from Lee Clark’s Terriers, but a second offer received on Thursday night has tested Mitchell’s resolve.

And rather than let the former Weymouth captain, who has one year remaining on his current Cherries deal, walk away for nothing next summer, it now appears Mitchell will be forced to cash in on one of the club’s most valuable assets.

Robinson could trigger a one-year option in his current contract should he decide to stay in Dorset, but the Londoner appears to be set on furthering his career away from the Seward Stadium.

Mitchell confirmed to the Echo this morning that Robinson had been given permission to talk to the Yorkshire outfit, but stressed that their second bid for the star had not yet been accepted.

It is likely the finer points of the sale would be dealt with after Robinson had agreed personal terms, however.

Speaking to the Echo last night before the latest developments, Mitchell said: “We don’t want Anton to go and it is a very awkward situation. We had a better offer from Huddersfield, but it is difficult because he is a key member of our squad.

“However, we are in a situation where, in six months’ time, he could talk to other clubs and could leave for nothing in the summer.

“The ball is in Huddersfield’s court and we are waiting to hear back from them. The offer is pretty much there but we have gone back with a small counter. Personal terms haven’t been sorted so it’s far from a done deal, but things are moving that way.

“I don’t want to lose him, but that is the situation we are in. We have to build a side that is committed to playing for Bournemouth and if Anton is not prepared to commit for another year and someone is interested in him, then we have to give him the chance to speak to them.

“As far as we are aware, at this moment in time, Anton hasn’t made any decision himself.”

Mitchell was quick to criticise the option in Robinson’s contract in favour of the player, claiming it had left the club “in limbo”.

He added: “The one-year options in the players’ favours are crazy. They don’t work for the club at all. It was entered into before I arrived at the club and there is no way it would happen now I am there and now Lee is the manager.

“An option in the club’s favour is fine but in the player’s interest it just leaves us in the situation we are now in with Anton.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell confirmed Crystal Palace, who visit the Seward Stadium today (3pm), had made a further enquiry regarding striker Danny Ings.

Mitchell said: “Crystal Palace phoned again last night and asked us to name a price for Danny Ings. I said it has to start at £1million.

“The guy has to report back to his people but the truth of the matter is, that is what I think he is worth.”
