Cherries old boy George Webb insisted he had nothing to prove to his former club – but admitted he would relish a return to the professional ranks.

Webb, who made one League Two appearance under former Dean Court boss Eddie Howe in 2009, signed for Wimborne Town from Hamworthy United this summer and should line up for his new club tonight at Cuthbury.

After being released by Howe following Cherries’ Greatest Escape three years ago, Webb joined Gosport Borough, before spells with Wessex League Bournemouth Poppies and the Hammers, where he netted 22 goals in 41 starts for both clubs.

The 21-year-old told the Echo: “One day I would love to be playing again at professional level and you never know what a decent performance may bring.

“I have nothing to prove to my old club, but I still want to demonstrate that I am capable of playing at a good standard.

“Even though it’s just a friendly, the team are very keen to beat Bournemouth.”

Playing well tonight is not the youngster’s only concern, as he wants to step up to the mark in the Southern League this year after his exploits in the Wessex League.

He added: “I am genuinely excited about a fresh start at Wimborne Town as it is a fantastic club.

“Playing with assistant manager Paul Roast is going to be a great experience and hopefully I will learn a few things from him.

“He is definitely a great role model for the club and the players, including myself, look up to him.”

Webb will not be the only former Cherries man playing in black and white tonight, as team-mates Jason Harvell, Matt Dear, Jamie Davidson and Matt Kemble all learned their trade in the Dean Court youth ranks.

Webb said: “All of the ex-Cherries lads are really looking forward to facing up against our former team-mates.

“Steve Cuss (Wimborne boss) is a great coach who gives 100 per cent to get the best out of his players and expects high levels of professionalism. This will be reflected in the strong squad he selects tonight.”
