RISING stars Joe Partington and Danny Ings have both highlighted the vital role played by Cherries’ unsung hero Joe Roach in their respective developments.

Partington and Ings, products of the fruitful Dean Court youth system, were yesterday rewarded for their progress with improved two-and-a-half year contracts.

The pair both flourished under Roach’s tutelage and are among a long line of players to have graduated through the ranks – with some going on to earn the club sizeable transfer fees.

Ings, who is in his first year as a professional, has made an explosive entrance on to the scene and has been handed a fourth new contract in eight months.

The 18-year-old striker, who netted his maiden career goal during Cherries’ 3-2 win over Swindon on Tuesday, paid a particularly gushing tribute to Roach.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it hadn’t been for Joe,” said the Winchester-born teenager. “He has made me the player I am and I appreciate everything he has done for me.

“When I had my long-term injury last season, he didn’t just push me to one side and leave me. He spoke to me all the time and kept me involved.

“I have got everything to thank him for because I think Eddie Howe relied on Joe for pushing me through as he didn’t see me play too often last season.”

Partington was also quick to praise Roach, who, with the help of a small but dedicated team and limited resources, has transformed the youth department since taking over 10 years ago.

The 20-year-old midfielder said: “I can only speak about Joe in the highest regard. He took a gamble on me after I had come in on trial as a 16-year-old. He has done lots for me since I have been here and I will always be grateful to him for that.”

Both Partington and Ings were also keen to thank new Cherries boss Lee Bradbury for having faith in them.

Bradbury said: “We have seen the potential in Danny and wanted to reward him for the way he has worked. We want to keep him at the club for as long as we can.

“Joe has worked very hard over the past couple of years and is a very good pro. They are both young lads and we are looking for them to fulfil their potential with us over the next couple of years.”

A spokesperson for Up The Cherries, a supporters’ website, told the Echo: “Lots of fans would like to see Joe Roach’s contribution to the club recognised in some way.

“Suggestions have included a lifetime achievement award, a testimonial or perhaps naming part of the stadium after him. It would be nice to give recognition to one of our unsung heroes.”
