Cherries: McQuoid's passport misery

Cherries star Josh McQuoid’s international career has been temporarily grounded – after he forgot to renew his passport.

The in-form striker was tonight due to be on duty for Northern Ireland in their final European Under-21 Championship qualifier in Germany.

But McQuoid was unable to link up with the squad for the trip to Bavaria after last week discovering that his travel document had expired a fortnight ago.

It was a major blow for McQuoid who had been excused from Northern Ireland’s clash with San Marino on Friday so he could be available for Cherries’ trip to Huddersfield on Saturday.

The Southampton-born 20-year-old, who qualifies for the Ulstermen through his late grandfather, subsequently grabbed Cherries’ opener at the Galpharm Stadium, his fourth goal in three games.

McQuoid told the Daily Echo: “It’s been a nightmare to be honest. After I received the call-up, I contacted the manager to ask him if I could play for Bournemouth on Saturday rather than the under-21s on Friday. He said that would be fine and asked if I could still go to Germany with the squad on Sunday.

“Everything was agreed and Northern Ireland were really good about it. I didn’t want to turn it down but explained that I had just got in the Bournemouth team and hoped to start against Huddersfield. They could have stopped me but were very understanding about my situation and realised it would be the best thing to do.

“I was getting my stuff together at the end of last week and realised my passport had just gone out of date, about two weeks ago. I just randomly checked it and started to panic. Northern Ireland had been so good to me and I didn’t want to let them down.

“I tried to get an emergency passport. I had to fill in a form, get some photos done and write a letter explaining the circumstances. Either my mum or dad was going to catch a train to London and go to the embassy on my behalf.

“But when we phoned them on Friday, we were told there were no appointments left. The earliest I could have got would have been Monday but that would have been too late. By the time I had got everything sorted out, it would have been too much of a rush. I was gutted.”

McQuoid, who has also been capped by Northern Ireland B, will be hoping to stake his claim for full honours by maintaining his impressive form for Cherries.

He added: “I haven’t really thought about that to be honest. This is my last year in the under-21s and my aim is to keep doing well for my club and try to earn my next contract with Bournemouth.

“As I progress, it is something I would love to do. I would jump at it if the opportunity were to come about but it is not on my mind at the moment.

“I’m not getting carried away or getting too far ahead of myself. I’m just going to keep working hard, concentrate on playing for Bournemouth and see where it takes me.”

At the risk of being cynical, was the passport lapse really an oversight ? Anyway, I agree with you CC C-siders, the last thing we want is Josh getting crocked playing as a mercenary for NI. Perhaps someone can enlighten me, but is it true that NI could have insisted JM played ? If so that's crazy. He is under contract to AFCB. It should be up to the club if they want to release him. As Josh said he has just had the chance to establish himself in the AFCB team, which he has taken with both hands. If I was him I wouldn't want anything getting in the way of that.

It's a pity that Josh and other AFCB members don't require a work permit to leave Bournemouth for any job opportunites that may arise!

Keep them here, if they go elsewhere the dreaded injury lurgy may strike.
Seriously, I can understand Josh's dissappointment in not being able to play for his country.
Why does he need a passport, I though Germany was in the EU and all residents had free passage between countries ???

with ref to my post yesterday: thank God Mr Jontee - Mudford can at least see where I am coming from. Take it from me we will sell probably two more before the season ends if we are still successful!!!

Unlike the other 'air-head' who inferred that I was not looking at the bigger picture. When In fact I WAS looking at the bigger picture in that every time we build a successful side we have always sold on and stripped the club of its assets i.e the Macdougall era under John Bond, The Redknapp era , the SOD era, and if we are too successful it will be The Eddie era as well!!!!

I always find it amazing that our players always rant on about what an excellent team spirit we have here at AFCB and look at aspirations of the Championship -- And then as soon as a bigger club shows interest in them they are off like rat out of an aqua-duct.

So Mr Molbo or whatever it was: YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE, and see the pattern that is developing here.

Regards-

Especially to thiose who have the vision to see past then ends of their noses.

Another trip down memory Lane then smhinto (or whatever it was). How did you know i am a Mr? Another one of your accurate assumptions based on nothing? To quote you, "Take it from me we will sell probably two more before the season ends if we are still successful!!!" And where do you get that little gem of info from? Probably as accurate as your 'Take it from me' line about how our world is going to end because Pitman was sold and we now wouldn't be capable of scoring - Got that one bob on didn't you? Not....... After we briefly dropped out of the top 3 last season, wasn't it you amongst others that predicted a mid table finish at best? Another pearl of wisdom. And never once did i notice you come on and say that you got it wrong - You just reappear a few days later to spin out some more glass half empty theories.

No one disputes the past, i just get sick of being reminded of it every day by the likes of you. Look to the future and what might possibly be more positive than you imagine.

You really ought to lighten up a bit. I don't know what you do for a living but i just hope you're not a samaritan with your ever positive spin on things.

And one last thing whilst we're on about people's livings - I don't think you've grasped the nettle but professional footballers are doing what they do to earn a living. When will fans see through this tribal mindset about loyalty? To us it is a passion to follow our team; to most players it is a job of work' end of!!
Tell me Mr/Ms smhinto of Lincoln; if you was offered infinitely better employment terms and conditions by a rival company would you not also be 'off like rat out of an aqua-duct'?

Rant over. Kind Regards xxx

Sminto: We are always going to be a selling club. We don't have the luxury of affording not to be.
Surely it's better to have players 'ranting' on about the Championship rather than saying nothing.
At least, that might encourage other players and the fans.
If a player is seen as good enough to move on, then why shouldn't they.
I think most of us are realistic enough to know that the first players we lose are our best players.
Only in an ideal world would be be able to keep the best of the best.
Players moving on also leave room for new blood to come up from the ranks, look at Stockley, at 17 he's playing in the first team and will only get better. What about Josh, he came from the academy didn't he ?? Look at him this season.
I don't think we will keep him very long and the same goes for any of our better players.
I will always support the team. We have to expect players to move on.

Of course this can only happen in the UK as every other European country don't require you to use a passport and you can just use your drives licence or any other official document :p Its good for the club though one less games for Josh to get injured in, which right now would really hurt his chances of breaking into the first team with so much quality up front, even if it is injured at the moment.

His passport is required to prove identity to the UEFA officials who scrutanise every player to prove they are elegable to play in the fixture, as well as travel.

Smhinto, the Cherries will always be a potential selling club, particularly after the experience of the last 10 years or so. The club cannot prevent their better players from seeking to move on and progress their careers, though hopefully they can offer them the benefit of experience that disuades the likes of Brett from jumping at the first opportunity and making a mistake - as I’m sure Blackpool would have been.

The key is having a management team that can spot good players either through the youth set up of from smaller clubs. That way they become an investment for the club. To find such a great (so far!) replacement for Brett so quickly underlines the value in the current set up and makes the 'Brett' deal look like very sound judgement. Josh has always looked a decent player but until he was given a run no-one really knew just how good.

The great thing about Cherries fans is they take each game as it comes. They can appreciate a good performance even if we lose (eg at Saints). Unlike the plastic premiership fans who demand to win every game and cry if they fail, the lower leagues have the real fans.

The reality these days is that apart from Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and possibly Liverpool ALL clubs face this problem. Look at Everton with Wayne Rooney for example. They could not hold on to their best players. We are no different and have to manage our situation wisely to ensure we have new players coming through.

Smhinto: I've asked this before but never had a reply. How many matches have you been to in recent years?? Just waiting for us to lose a game then you can start telling us that you have said for ages that we need an experienced manager.
I for one am happy with the whole club. As i said when Brett left, I hate players leaving but we always unearth someone knew. Josh is now showing his potential.
As for having a go at cherries fans. Molbol has been pretty correct all along, so maybe choose someone else to have a go at.

Northstand; I think you'll find the poit being that under the EU the idea was that member states wouldn't need passports.
Your a moaning little £$% aren't you!!

CC C-siders.. Yes, I followed the point that member states shouldn't need passports, but since the govenment scrapped the ID card system and border control in EU states and UK do not accept the photo card driving license we're abit stuffed really. I'm not half as bad as some of the doomers and naysayers, half the time people go on about old news, stuff which isn't really interesting or something else.. I'm not trolling, just wish someone would talk about something interesting instead of droning on about the same cr4p all the time.. It would be rather nice if OHEC could find something newsworthy... I feel sorry for Josh, but its hardly "man from boscombe gets 6 numbers on lottery" news is it?

And yes, i'm not happy unless I've had abit of a moan.. :)
