Cherries: Pearce not surprised by interest in Howe

CAPTAIN Jason Pearce admits it is no surprise to see Eddie Howe linked with managerial vacancies – but he is hoping Cherries keep hold of their prized asset.

Howe watched his side secure an impressive 2-2 draw at Huddersfield on Saturday following a week that saw him installed as one of the bookmakers’ favourites to succeed Alan Pardew in the Southampton hot-seat.

Pardew was sacked by Cherries’ League One rivals seven days ago and, along with the likes of Gianfranco Zola, Nigel Adkins and Phil Brown, Howe has appeared at the top of the betting lists for the St Mary’s post.

He continues to be linked with the position but, following the Galpharm Stadium clash, Howe insisted the speculation had not been a distraction and that he remained “solely focused” on Cherries.

Since taking the Dean Court reins, he has built a reputation as one of the country’s top young managers by saving the club from relegation and then masterminding their promotion into the third tier.

Howe has previously been linked with jobs at the likes of Hull City, while he also declined a switch to Peterborough United last year.

Pearce, who was handed the team captaincy by Howe, is one of many players to have flourished under the 32-year-old and would love him to continue his work with Cherries.

The centre-half told the Echo: “It’s no surprise that he’s |being linked with it because |he’s a really good manager, |him and Jason, and we’ve got a great team.

“Hopefully, we’re showing what a good team we are and he’s showing what a good manager he is.”

He added: “I signed a three-year deal, hoping I could really move on in my career and that he could improve me.

“He’s come in, brought in different ideas and he’s got a great team ethic, and I think that shows on the pitch.

“He’s been great since he’s been in charge and, hopefully, it will carry on. Hopefully, he will stay so we can progress and move on.

“He showed great faith in me and I just want to repay him with my performances. Being the captain, I just want to keep moving on and showing what I can do.

“He’s an up-and-coming great manager. I won’t be surprised if he does move on eventually. But, hopefully, just not yet.”

When asked whether there had been any indication of an official approach from Southampton or if there was any news on that front, Howe said: “No, no there’s not.

“From my point of view, I’m solely focused on Bournemouth and trying to get as many points as we can at this stage of the season.

“It’s a hard enough job as it is, without anything else getting in the way.”

He added: “It’s not been a distraction to me. It wasn’t a distraction as a player. I think it’s a compliment to be linked with any job, but nothing can sway my focus.”

All I can say to that is "Hear Hear" we all know that Eddie and Jason make an outstanding Management Team and know that they will move on to test themselvess at the highest level at some time. But not as yet please. finish your project here first. As it happens I don't think that it will be to the Saints, there are real dressing room problems there, part of the Management team busy undermining the Manager and an interfering CEO. Eddie too knows that he could be on the fringe of creating something "Special" here and I beieve will want to take it further forward. He too has shewn his loyalty to the Club before.

Eddie Howe would be mad to go to Southampton with the turmoil behind the scenes up there.
But if a big club like Saints came forward for him with a huge compensation package for the club there's no doubt EM "wouldn't stand in Eddie's way if he wanted to test himself at a higher level."
The fact remains that we are a small club with serious debts, which means every member of the team and management are effectively for sale at all times for the right price.
That stinks, but it's true.

Unfortunately you're right.
All we can hope for is that EM only lets players / EH and JT go for the right price.
Last season I said Eddie would be gone by November, probably being a little pessimistic. Given our early form, he would be mad to do so. If he sees out this and next season, he may find that we are in the Championship anyway. Let's hope so.

Our debt level is much reduced these days, but like you , I don't think that Eddie Mitchell would stand in the way of anyone leaving the Club, if the price is right. I also think that Eddie would be unwise to go to the Saints at this time, but, rumours persist that he has had an interview and though the chance to do so has happened many times, he unlike the Exeter Manager, hasn't distanced himself from the post. Add to that the sheer number of Scouts at our recent games it is likely that should he and Jason move on, many players would follow, Pearce for example is being linked with Middlesborough.

Bit of a worry.
There's a lot of difference between "I'm focused on the next game" and "I'm not leaving AFCB"

We have to trust Eddie & Jason to stick to their word.
They say they are focussed at Bournemouth. We should believe them.
As for aints, as one post says, there is so much in-fighting in the club, right from the team up to the CEO. Who, in their right mind, would go into such a situation.
We will lose Eddie & Jason, they are too good for us as we are. We can only hope that they will bring Cherries along and move up with the team.
We will always be grateful for them for what they have done here. Hopefully, we shall keep them for a bit longer.

I hope Eddie and Jason stay but it is a worry when certain newspapers say Eddie has had an interview for the post.
If he should go, the positives to the club would be a good compensation sum, and probably in excess of £1 million for Pearce, Pugh and Bartley who would probably go with him.
Hands up, any of us who would turn down the chance to triple our wages for the sake of an extra thirty minutes drive to work?
For those who think Eddie would be irreplaceable I would commend to them a young manager called Paul Buckle at Torquay. After spells at Weymouth and Assistant Manager at Exeter he has had three years experience at Torquay. The locals are saying that this team is playing as well as any in the past thirty years, and Buckle's non league contacts are excellent, bearing in mind the small budget he is working with.
As they say "when one door closes another opens".......look at Josh Mcquoid. One minute a promising midfield player, the next top goalscorer in Division 1.

after listening to Meridian tonight it does not look too bright with Eddie they seem to think he is the done deal. It is our worst nightmare he would take Jason with him then pick the players he wants, remember John Bond took 6 of the team and we were relegated. Please Eddie stay this season and if you do go please NOT to Saints. You deserve better and as for you EM why don't you fight to keep our jewels, instead of saying you wont stand in anyones way.

if EH left now he would let down the whole club, the support he has had has been superb, he will let down all the supporters who stuck by him, he will leave eventually for higher things, but Eddie, finish the job here first, then go with our blessing, do not ship out for a bum job at Saints.

If Eddie goes now he will not let us down. He saved us from dropping out the football league and he has taken us up to division 1.
If he gets the chance of a huge pay rise good luck to him, and we should thank him for all he has done.
We may get some quality loan signings from the saints as Eddie will not see us struggle.

I really can't see EH being too bothered about going to manage the lot up the road - I would like to think with his AFC Bournemouth blood pumping through his veins he can see that the future is red and black!!

That lot will have Roberto Martinez.

It was always going to happen. It's just a bit earlier than anyone might have thought.
Eddie owes AFCB absolutely nothing.
AFCB owes Eddie their league status and therefore, given their debts at the time, their existence as a football club.
Good luck to him. He'll need it with that lot up the road. Fans that will turn on him at the drop of a hat and a CEO who has no scruples. Watch your back Eddie. 4-0 away wins mean nothing to them.

deano, tezza & dc - Am i missing something gents? Where is all this info coming from that it's a done deal because i have trawled every avenue of info and no one is reporting that Eddie is going except on this little thread. Quite the opposite in fact. Everywhere else seems to see it as Phil Brown (and the bookies have slashed the odds on it being him). Eddie's not even at the races.

Are you sure they're isn't a bit of WUM ing going on here?

Perhaps the echo could get out there and get us some details on it - The fact that they aren't posting any articles on it means it's either a non story or the Echo aren't good at getting the info.

Come on Echo - Please get us the lowdown rather than posting piffle about the 'scoop' of Josh's passport!!

There isn't a Press Conference this morning at St Mary's - that is the one fact we can be sure of. Indeed, Nigel Adkins is the hot favouite now for the "hot seat" , his Club have anounced that they will not stand in way of his accepting the job. Hopefully he will get the job. I have heard that the Saints expect to make an announcement re the appointment of a new manager within 48 hours, so we shall soon know.

Lew Clayton, where did you get you're info ? £600 pw for Brett. He surely would not have got out of bed for that. If that's what AFCB pay their players, they don't deserve to keep any of them. As for Eddie, no smoke without fire. He hasn't ruled it out which means he will go if everything fits. The other posts on here are spot on. Its got the Macdougall/Bond era written all over it.

I was only going on Deano and Tezza posts. Probably won't do that again.
After my post I also checked the Southampton website plus the usual sports sites and saw nothing. I hope you are right Molbol.
However, in the event that EH does go, my comments stand.

Looks like the rumours I heard could have been a wind up.
The Southampton Echo seem to think Phil Brown will be the new manager. I hope so because losing EH & JT would be a disaster for AFCB.
