Cherries: Pugh makes his Marc in Town draw

MARC Pugh grabbed a deserved equaliser as Cherries maintained their impressive start in League One by earning a share of the spoils at the Galpharm Stadium.

Pugh headed home at the far post after Cherries substitute Harry Arter had supplied a delightful assist 11 minutes from time.

Earlier, Eddie Howe’s men had taken the lead when Josh McQuoid netted his fourth goal in three starts to break the deadlock after 32 minutes.

But Antony Kay restored parity with a header on the stroke of half-time before Gary Roberts’s penalty three minutes after the break put the hosts ahead.

Chances were at a premium during the opening stages of the first half, although Cherries enjoyed the better of the possession and controlled proceedings for long periods.

The first noteworthy goalmouth action came after 28 minutes when Town defender Liam Ridehalgh was forced to clear an Anton Robinson header off the line.

McQuoid’s precise finish fired Cherries ahead, the 20-year-old curling a delightful right-foot effort past Town goalkeeper Alex Smithies from just inside the 18-yard box.

The opportunity came about after Marvin Bartley had slipped the ball into McQuoid’s path following a surging run from near the halfway line.

McQuoid went close to doubling Cherries’ lead when he met a Liam Feeney cross at the far post after 36 minutes, only to see his effort bounce wide of the upright.

Huddersfield drew level in first-half stoppage time when Kay rose to powerfully head a Roberts corner past Cherries goalkeeper Shwan Jalal.

And the Terriers edged into a 2-1 lead just after half-time when Roberts netted from the spot after Bartley had been judged to have tripped the Town midfielder.

Alan Lee, a recent £250,000 signing from Crystal Palace, went close to making it 3-1 when he drove Roberts’s cross against the upright after 63 minutes.

And although Cherries thought they had levelled when Robinson headed Pugh’s centre past Smithies, the effort was ruled out for offside.

However, Howe’s charges were rewarded for their endeavours when they hit back to equalise through Pugh 11 minutes from time.

The midfielder was on hand to register his third goal of the season, planting a header past Smithies following an exquisite pass from substitute Harry Arter.

Cherries were thankful to Jalal for saving superbly after Town substitute Lee Novak had taken aim three minutes from time. And although Town piled forward in search of a late winner, Cherries stood firm to claim an excellent point.

Cherries (4-1-4-1): Jalal; Bradbury (Hollands, 64), Garry, Pearce, Wiggins; Cooper (Arter, 73); Feeney (Cummings, 90), Robinson, Bartley, Pugh; McQuoid.

Unused subs: Taylor, Stockley, Ings, Nelson.

Booked: Robinson.

Terriers (4-4-2): Smithies; Peltier, Clarke, McCombe, Ridehalgh; Pilkington (Croft, 76), Gudjonsson, Kay, Roberts; Lee, Rhodes (Novak, 62).

Unused subs: Garner, Johnson, Atkinson, Chippendale, Bennett (g/k).

Didn't see the game.. Perhaps someone can fill in the gaps. But I have to say I think there are some defensive frailties that need addressing, perhaps more so than replacing Pitman as McQuoid seems to be doing that just fine.

I make that 5 goals in the last 2 home games and that I think is worryingly high. So long as we keep on scoring we should be OK, but to score 5 in two games and only take 2 points is definitely four points dropped.

Yet another excellent away performance from the lads, against a strong side. Last two away games yielding four points is very encourageing and confirms that the new lads are settleing in very well.
Congratulations also to the 304 loyal supporters who made the long trip North.

Another well earned result and good to see the lads battle to the end. We are only two points from the top and that makes good reading. Well done the Cherries

Don't think there is a problem - last week was a one off nightmare and everyone will be pleased with a point at Huddersfield. According to Five Live we should have wraped it up in the first half (perhaps we could have defended their corner better?)

Seventh position is ok with me thanks Eddie and the team

Hope your right. All I was suggesting was it might be something we want to look at and nip in the bud before it becomes a major issue. I do personally feel that another defender is needed, ideally.

dont worry sSem we wil be fine - i dont think we need a defender - it is eddies coaching addressing any weakness at the back that is more important

After the gaffes of the last two games it's good to see that the team are back on form.
Without the penalty we would have won. One point in playing a team of this calibre on their home ground is OK with me.
Keep it up Cherries, you're doing great !!!

dropped points last week yes, today a good point, in ryan garry and jason pearce we have 2 of the best centre backs in the league..

Given the make shift attack, a very good point. The defensive problems seem to be a lack of height at the back, there do seem to be some big, physical teams in this Division.

I didn't go to the game because of work commitments but listened to the match on Solent by the sound of willo we had most of the play against promotion contenders a hand ball should have given us a penalty (though I don't know if that would have helped giving our penalty taking :) and a soft penalty against.
Tie that in with makeshift strikers we done great. Don't think we have anything to worry about when we get to full strength we will be a force in this league. Also sounded like Josh was being hacked to pieces and getting nothing awarded but that's usually the case for the cherries.
A good result next week will put us back in the top 5 unlike our friends up the road (I wonder how many comments from there fans will be on our blog this week)

Just got back from the game and the lads were well worth the point if not all three. Huddersfield's equaliser was their first real attempt on goal which shows the Cherries dominance. See Shwan's save on FL show - it was top drawer stuff.
Defence looked fine Garry & Pearce were excellent and Shaun Cooper was superb. I was impressed with Bartley & Robinson and I'm sure there are bags of goals due from McQuoid & Pugh. Feeney rang the full-back ragged but his final ball is lacking at times.
Great day out-great result and a superb stadium at Galpharm.
Good to meet Neil Perrett before the game as well.

Can't wait for Hillsborough next month.

Well done to the lads

Yorkie Cherry's summing up is a very fair assessment of the game. We were definitely the better team in the first half and unlucky to go in level. They created a few more chances second half but we still looked the better team for much of the half. Arter livened things up when he came on so credit EH for a good positive substitution. I thought Garry and Pearce were immense today and McQuoid took a lot of stick from two very big centre halves but never stopped running and looking for the ball. We scored two good goals in open play to their two set pieces and Jalal made the save of the game as well. A really good point and good support as well. Never mind Hillsborough here's to 3 points at Oldham in 2 weeks time!

A point at one of last seasons League One play-off teams is a creditable result and one most of us would have settled for before the game.
Shame we let Notts Co equalise last week.... we'd be top of the table tonight!

Excellent reading on the top scorers chart. Who would have thought, after Pitman leaving, we would have a player at the top of this particular chart. Early days but a great start for the young lad.

this team can only get better, keep them together and we can achieve something special this season, I firmly believe that, the set up is now right, from top to bottom we have a great team ethic, individual players dont win you anything, but get the team spirit right and you are on to a winner, we have that team spirit now, great to watch, lets see how far we can go.

could be top of league one, are top of the scoring charts in league one, and yet we were supposed to be desperate for strikers, makes you wonder why people have such little faith in our own young talent. Great point in what for me is our hardest away game of the season and to score two goals, coming from behind as well shows how far the side has come in such a short time, the team spirit and fight of last season is there and look where that took us, not expecting the same in this league but to have seventh place and for a silly late goal last week would be top is more than i expected and makes the rest of the season feel that little bit easier than it did the first time i saw the fixture list, in eddie we trust, well done lads!!

The team that Eddie and Jason have put together is, I feel, one of the strongest and well balanced that the Club has ever had. We look likely to create a lot of chances per game with the likes of Feeney, Pugh, McQuoid and Bartley being particularly troublesome to the opposition. Bartley, for instance, is at the top of his game and when you think back to how his form flatlined under previous "managers" it is obvious that EH has the people-skills that can give players the confidence to achieve their potential. The united front that pervades Dean Court at the moment is so refreshing and I can't remember it ever being like this. The whole "team" from Eddie Mitchell downwards deserve the full backing of all supporters........le
t's enjoy it while it lasts - and hope that it lasts for a good while yet ! On a separate note can we get something done about the "South end" when we play teams that don't have much of an away following ? Surely best to try to fill that end at reduced prices than have empty seats, plus the atmosphere will be much better.

On a different subject. Any season ticket holders who want to go to Southampton ensure that you get your tickets asap. I was told by the ticket office yesterday morning that there arnt enough tickets for the amount of season ticket holders

I'm told Huddersfield local radio said we were the best team seen at the Galpharm in ages. Well played Eddie and the lads. With the rub of the green it could have been three points today. Agree with Codger that we do lack a bit of height across the team. Defending corners and free kicks was always going to be a problem today with their giant centre half McCombe causing mayhem and panic but other than one lapse we defended well.

I can't stop praising this team and the job done by Eddie & Jason (and all the backroom boys & girls).
People thought we would falter with Brett going but the team seems to go from strength to strength.
We have what are arguably one of the best teams in this League. Having just watched Sheffield Wednesday v Brentford, all I can say is that if that is the best they have to offer, bring it on.
Jalal is priceless. He make great save after great save and treats it like a day at the office.
With the talent we have I can only hope we can keep the wolves and scavengers from the door.
I have no qualms about us staying in this league, I am even thinking about The Championship in the not too distant future.
I am so proud to call Cherries..MY TEAM.

Jason and ryan are quality players but we are going to get bullied in the air at corners and set pieces in most games. It's too late now for permanent but Eddie needs to reinforce.
