Speedway: Stunned Aussies bow out of World Cup

Bjarne Pedersen will be aiming to lift the World Team Cup for a third time in Saturday’s final after Denmark won tonight’s race-off on home territory at Vojens.

The Pirates star was Mr Consistency, reeling off five second places and grabbing 10 points as Denmark triumphed with 48 points, one ahead of second-placed Sweden.

But it was a disastrous night for Australia, well beaten into third place by the Danes and Swedes.

The Aussies, for whom Poole Castle Cover duo Chris Holder (eight), Davey Watt (seven) and Darcy Ward (six) won three races between them, struggled to get 36 points, with Russia fourth on 19.

Denmark and Sweden join Great Britain and cup holders Poland in the final at Vojens on Saturday.

Pedersen, who helped Denmark secure the Ove Fundin Trophy in 2006 and 2008, will be aiming to make it a hat-trick.

He has made a mockery of Denmark team manager Jan Staechmann’s initial decision to leave him out of this year’s side.

Staechmann eventually admitted to Pedersen he had made a mistake and recalled him.

The Poole rider has clearly shown that was the right decision, impressing last night after top-scoring for Denmark with 11 as they finished second behind Poland in event one at Gorzow last Saturday.
