Mitchell: Cherries could be top club on south coast

AMBITIOUS chairman Eddie Mitchell is convinced Cherries are finally ready to win the battle for south coast supremacy.

Mitchell believes the buoyant Dorset outfit is equipped to leave the shadow of Portsmouth and Southampton, its perceived more illustrious neighbours.

And Cherries’ majority shareholder is adamant the Dean Court club is primed to claim top billing from the fierce Hampshire rivals.

His comments are sure to light the blue touchpaper ahead of Cherries’ forthcoming clashes against the fallen Premier League pair.

Cherries tonight host Pompey in a pre-season friendly before heading to St Mary’s to meet Saints in the first round of the Carling Cup on August 10.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Echo, Mitchell said: “I would like to think we could creep along and become top dogs on the south coast.

“We have got a great set up here and the team and feelgood factor around the club is going to propel us up with them.

“I know Southampton are favourites to win League One but I think we will do well against them this season.

“I don’t think Portsmouth are going to be up there for long and they don’t seem to be going very far at the moment.

“We are closing in on both of them and I would like to think that, eventually, we are going to be the top club on the south coast.”

Portsmouth, who are now managed by former Cherries star Steve Cotterill, were relegated from the top flight last season, while Saints lost their Premier League place in 2005.

Like Cherries, the two clubs have both suffered their fair share of financial problems in recent years – with all three having had points deductions for entering administration.

But while Pompey continue to struggle, Saints have become one of the wealthiest clubs in the country under current owner Markus Liebherr.

Mitchell added: “I know we will be underdogs when we play Saints but it’s only the size of their stadium that dictates that. We will have nothing to lose and I would like to think we would come out on top.

“As much as people believe, it’s not all about money. It might be in the top flight and there is no getting away from it that money helps.

“But there are other contributory factors to success and they are hard work, determination and belief. We have got those in abundance. That’s why I think we will do really well this season, compared with some of the clubs that have got a lot more money to spend.

“I think it shows just how far we have come. We have come from death’s door to the heart beating very fast. Southampton have remained stagnant.

“They had a good shot at promotion last season but didn’t make it. They must be under immense pressure to go up this season.

“They have got the makings of a top-flight club but it’s not automatic that you are going to make the best use of that.

“I think they will have an uphill battle.”

Portsmouth's biggest worry is the Taxman's petition for £37 million cos if they can't exit administration before the season starts another points deduction is on the way.
With the squad and goal scoring power Southampton have they should run away with league 1. Any blips and Pardew will be under pressure.
Mid table this season will meet expectation. Anything above and it will feel Bmth are making real progress.
Just hope we can get a settled team, score a few more goals than last season and get some early momentum.

A very confident and ambitous chairman and some very wise words. I also feel that we need to get a good little start and score a few more golas than last season. Agree with wookj1 and think anything above mid table is a bonus. Anyone know how much the tickets for Dorchester are for saturday? I couldnt find them anywhere. Many thanks. UP THE CHERRIES!!!!!!

Brighton fan here.
Your chairmans comments are deluded and embarrassing. I suggest you just concentrate on your own club rather than trying to "big it up" on the likes of Pompey and Southampton - like us, you're not even on their radar as "rivals".

Thankfully our chairman Tony Bloom doesn't run his mouth off in the press with nonsense like this. He's just quietly getting on with the job of restoring the Albion and repairing the damage done in the Archer years.

Good luck with your season, but try not to get carried away with Mitchell getting ideas above your station, or it will all end in disappointment.

This guy is clearly deluded!

A very small percentage is correct as in....you need belief, determination bla bla bla...yes Mr Mitchell but you also need decent players. Its one thing to say I think we can have a good season and follow on from last seasons success, but to state that Bournemouth are on the brink of leap frogging Southampton and Pompey is arrogant and ridiculous, Im not quite sure where he gets this from either.

Southampton have prem facilities and money to burn and arnt scared of spending it, so Its not as if they are in financial ruin with no good players.

Pompey have been relegated but the steady the ship season should see them pushing for playoffs.

Have we forgotten Brighton & hove Albion Mr Mitchell, I believe they are on the south coast if im not wrong....yes the club with a brand new 22,500 stadium 12 months away, an ambitious chairman and one of the best young growing managers in the game.

While Bournemouth have spent hardly anything and have been promoted with an average league one squad, mid-table at best.

Over 90 minutes im sure Bournemouth could give it a good go and maybe even sneak some points off the albion & saints, but to leapfrog all 3 and stabalise that would take a minor miracle, I suppose stranger things have happened and I dont have anything against Bournemouth.

I cant see it myself. Nice to gee up the fans before day 1 i suppose.

I think your chairman either should pay up or shut up, you cant get success if you spend nothing.

UP THE ALBION. (see you soon)

To use a horrible, text speak expression: "LOLZ". That's really brightened up my Wednesday. I'd like to point out that there are another two clubs on the south coast that Bournemouth need to overtake:

-Plymouth Argyle
-Brighton and Hove Albion

It'll be interesting to see how they do against both these teams this season but I'll be seriously impressed if they finish above them.

Eddie Mitchell doesn't seriously think we are on the point of becoming the top dogs of the South, a lot of what he is saying is tongue in cheek and i'm surprised so many people have taken him so seriously.

I'm even more surprised at the amount of Brighton fans watching the threads on our local rag. Why would you be so interested in little old Bournemouth?

Good luck for next season Seagulls; i'm sure you'll do well with probably the second best young manager in the FL.

I look forward to going to sunny Brighton maybe in 2011/12 - Sky TV for me this year i'm afraid as my eyesight isn't up to visiting the Withdean.

This is all "Hype" from the Chairman, designed to sell more Season Tickets, to put "bums on seats" and generally to promote the Club. He's far too canny to believe such nonsense The Saints should win the Division, buy in seasoned, experienced "pros" ( much to the detriment of their Youth Programme) and repeat the process should they go up. A tried and tested route, which Chelsea and Man City have followed. If they aren't in the top three at Christmas , Pardew will no doubt be sacked. Poor Pompey have a minefield to get through to survive. let alone thrive - most of us will wish them well. As for Brighton, just how much money has been borrowed to build their new Stadium and can they afford either the interest or the rental, either way I suspect that their Manager may well have a tiger by it's tail and will be under enormous pressure from the start. The majority of the Cherries supporters, hope that we finish in the top half and progress over the next few years and maybe go up another League. After all the trauma of recent years we are content to see entertaining football and witness steady progress, both off and on the field and a team that is competitive. Our strategy of producing our own players, over a third of our Squad are products of our youth system, and bringing in young talented players who are ambitious to suceed, is by it's nature a slow process. But we will get there, in time. I hope to see all our neighbouring Clubs prosper and us with them

Im not a fan of AFCB or any of the other clubs along the south coast, but i think Mr Mitchell's tongue was firmly in his cheek here!! Its the kind of thing you hear from all sorts of people at clubs at the beginning of any season, and at the end of the season we can look back and think 'what an idiot!'.
.
I think if AFCB make top half this season, tha would be an achievement. Saints should go up, Pompey, who knows! But as a couple of Seagull fans have pointed out Brighton are looking strong, and with a new stadium in 2011-12 it will only make them stronger.

Easy 10 says...
12:20pm Wed 28 Jul 10

Tongue in cheek or not, it makes him sound like a halfwit.

Anyway, we've not borrowed so much as a penny to fund the stadium. Albion chairman Tony Bloom has paid for the whole thing out of his own (considerable) fortune in the form of an interest-free loan. The Blooms have been on the board for generations (Tony is the third), and he is a lifelong Albion fan, so unlike some previous unscrupulous chairman, we know we can trust this guy.

We're VERY lucky.

Interesting to hear what Mr Mitchell is saying. I don't think he is a halfwit for saying what he has said. We have more than just an average league 1 side in my opinion and if we can complement it with a couple of season long loans to bolster the depth and give us options (particularly defensively) then I see no reason why we shouldn't push for a play-off place.

To suggest that THIS SEASON will be the season we get the better of Saints and Pompey and Brighton as well is unlikely, but in the next 3-5 years I see no reason why we shouldn't. We had a genuine bid from a Russian Consortium turned down for the club and I imagine if we continue performing in this ilk then more bids of this kind will emerge.

We definitely have the best manager outside the Premier League in Eddie Howe and as long as you have someone like him in charge, then the world is your proverbial oyster.

Yes, this season is a season for consolidation, but next season, we could really push on and look to establish ourselves as a Championship club. And there is no reason why AFCB shouldn't go further. There is a population of about 300,000 in the Bournemouth and Poole area, so there is no reason why we shouldnt be getting Premier League attendances.

And theres more to come.

Fair play to you easy 10.
If there is one set of supporters, apart from AFCB! that deserves better times, it's BHA.
As I've said before, I want all the South Coast sides to do well, including Southampton, despite the ridiculous comments from that utter moron "Milton Archer".
Regarding bragging rights, Saints (in particular), Pompey and Brighton are all bigger clubs than AFCB and only a fool would argue. However, footie, as they say, is a "funny old game" and the likes of AFCB and Yeovil can and will upset a few teams. I will be happy to finish lower mid table. Our recovery is still in its early stages. Let's keep our heads and just enjoy the ride.

Nice one EM. Tongue in cheek a lot of it i'm sure but with team spirit we'd beat a lot of teams. Having been to Southampton's ground and training facilities through my work i'd say we are a long way behind them. Cant speak for Pompey but they've their own probs to sort.
But on the pitch it's 11 v 11 and with our manager and team spirit who knows.
One things for sure, I have spent a couple of hours with a couple of Saints directors today and they are not as confident as the press make out. Pressure, expectation and lack of strikers (at minute) could hamper them a bit especially early season.
Keep up the confidence EM, but all I would ask is that you dont do the opposition managers team talk for them.
Milton Archers, you really need to get a life, a few weeks ago you sat on the BOURNEMOUTH website with the refresh button pressed. Sure you probably do it to Pompey as well.
Why not support your team as I know a lot of Saints supporters and they all are looking forward to the matches and show respect to us appreciating what we have achieved without someone chucking endless amounts of money at us.

I always find Pompey fans keep their heads, unlike saints and Seaweed fans, who tend to get a bit above themselves and belittle anything this club has achieved. Pure arrogence!!! We know our place, Eddie Mitch is having a laugh and AFCB fans know that. We have come along way in a very short time considering the years of strife, and yes, I COULD see us close to the play off's, but that would be one hell of an achievement and midtable would be more than acceptable.

PROMOTION has to be earnt and not a god given right!!!!!!!! I remember when saints were in the top flight and as i recall year after year the had to fight to remain there and only managed it by the skins of there teeth on several occassions!!!!!!!!! Even then they were a one man side with mr mat le-tiss who never scored that many but allways seemed to pop up with important goals after being very quiet for the rest of the time!!!!!!!!!! those days have gone and to prove they are better than us they must show it!!!!!!!!!!!! We at dean court have never been AMBITOUS which maybe our problem perhaps we should learn to be more AMBITOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! WE have the best young management team in the country and a board that at the moment seem to be mindful of the club so hopes should be high!!!!!!!!! looking forward to the new season and to the encounters with the scum, the tesco bags, the plymsoles, the yovelltinies. maybe a few upsets too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
