Cherries chairman in plea for wealth distribution

CHERRIES chairman Eddie Mitchell fears the bottom end of the Football League could start to disappear unless the distribution of wealth is spread more evenly.

Mitchell’s comments come after the league this week announced a lucrative new three-year sponsorship deal with energy firm Npower, worth £21m.

His observations also follow Labour peer Lord Dubs recently telling the House of Lords that the financial problems of a number of clubs had left the national game “in a mess”.

Cherries face a date in the High Court at the end of this month after being served with a winding-up petition by HM Revenue & Customs over tax arrears of £314,000.

The club, which revealed debts of around £850,000 earlier this month, has also been subject to a strict transfer embargo for the past 14 months due to its parlous financial position.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “First and foremost, I think the league are doing a great job. I do think they need to be as hard as they can with clubs that fall behind with their payments. I still believe the embargo is the right punishment, it pushes us on and helps us try to see sense.”

Cherries received a welcome cash boost when they made a rare appearance on Sky Sports on Monday, while the club will this season bank a £431,000 basic award payment from the league.

Mitchell added: “I think the money should be apportioned more generously and I also think they should try to get the cameras down more to the lower leagues. We are all trying to play football in our division and it was great entertainment on Monday.

“In my opinion, they need to spread the money a little bit wider, otherwise some of the lower leagues are going to fall away in the future.

“Maybe it won’t happen if people could be more sensible about the way things are run, but I think a little bit of financial encouragement would also go a long way as well. We all get a proportion of the money but, at the top end, it is saturated.”

Asked whether he felt the league should adopt a prevention-rather-than-cure policy for all member clubs, Mitchell replied: “I don’t think that is possible because there are so many people that can pull the wool over the eyes of others. We have seen it with our club where promises have been made which have got the club into trouble because they haven’t been kept.

“We want to move on from that. We are not promising anything other than to keep the club afloat and to try to play some decent football. We’ve got to gradually get rid of the debt, creep up on everybody and, hopefully, try to establish ourselves in the top half of the division above.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell said he anticipated no problems with Cherries receiving their agreed share of the Sky Sports £40,000 broadcast fee after Notts County said they would split the kitty 50-50.

Mitchell also said the club would be opening its Club 11 Gym on April 1. The facility, which will be open to the public, will also be used by Eddie Howe’s squad.

Agree with the sentiment but the troubles have already started lower down. Chester and Farsley Celtic. Also Salisbury.

as for promises being kept that's a bit rich. What about the deal the current board made with HMRC to keep up to date??

An independent article on AFCB makes an interesting read:

There is significant support in the town for the club, its survived many crises, many of us have already paid for next years season tickets which shows our confidence in the future. But we need more help financially so I agree that the distribution of wealth ought to be spread more evenly.

An independent article which backs up the feelings of many fans.

In the above statement from Mitchell he comments 'there are so many people that can pull the wool over the eyes of others' How right you are Mr Mitchell, you should know this better than most as it's what you've been doing since you bought into the club. Only telling a very small part of every story and employing your family on huge wages when the players will soon be hitch hiking to their away games as we will not be able to afford the coach to get them there.

Chris all the council did was to have a vote to back the relaxing of the FL embargo. So in other words pretty pointless seeing as if the FL embargo was relaxed we'd have another one for owing tax.

Politicians just being politicians and trying to jump on the back of the success of the team. When we really need them no doubt they will vanish.

I do think that far too many "posters" have their own agenda's and there is far too much negativity expressed. I listened to the new CEO of the FL yesterday, he sounded a sensible man , one of his comments re the owners of Club's was I thought very apposite to the Cherries, "many Club, owners who run their own business's successfuly, are so used to keeping things confidential and within the confines of their Board Room that hey have difficulty in accepting the need to keep their supporters in the picture and there are some fans who make unrealistic demands of their Club owners, expecting them to have bottomless pockets. The reality is that Club's have to be run as a business and live within their means". He also promised to offer more help to Clubs. I have no idea how things are going to work out for the Club, I hope that we will all be here in a years time, challenging Southampton for promotion. but who knows! I the meantime lets wish the lads a successful visit ti Grimsby tomorrow, a tough game against a side who beat Shrewsbury 3 -0 in their last home match.

I say let the club go under and we all start supporting Southampton. It's not about the football any more supporting this club.

Sorry, but what help is the council supposed to provide? There is no justification for any financial support from local council tax payers.

Good luck to the team for tomorrow. Grimsby really is a grotty place.

Thats a bit rich. Why should the council bail out the club whilst they charge a fourtune for home care. Its only football and not the welfare of the elderly.

A fair enough comparison High Treason and no one could dispute the lack of priorities in this country regarding that type of thing - But they were happy to shell out millions for the Imax though. Was that money well spent? They seem happy to waste money on that entertainment outlet.

The main trouble when you buy a business you take on all that business liabilities debits included now if the present board where unaware of any debit that is their fault for not doing there ground work nobody forced anybody to buy the club as it was up to the out going owners to get the best deal they could for themselves but what makes me cross is that I love supporting Bournemouth and have done for the last 40 plus odd years bought shares sponsored matches ,players match balls and bought season tickets and enjoyed every all of it and all its ups and downs and nobody forced me to part with my hard earned money I did for the team I support and still do also I have run and sold and bought various businesses and when you are in business and are the major shareholder you and you alone are where the buck stops and if you owe debits do not pay bills it down to you nobody else so if you buy a business with full knowledge that it has debits then the buck stops with the purchaser and nobody else the biggest shame is the FL ,the tax man and all other people are right to have there money as you knew that when you bought the business just because its a football team is no excuse and to use the loyal fans to help justify your position is wrong will the present board take note you got a very loyal set of supporters a first class football team first rate team managers so you bought the club with its full history you are the owners so invest in future of a first class football club and team and not blame everybody else and perhaps you might find other people folwing you and invest.

Well said `old red git` you make some very good points. We the fans get `used` all the time. The next event is a sponsored walk and i believe the Directors are taking part and have been told by Mitchell to get at least £1,000 each . Whilst i applaud all the people taking part surely the money raised will only go towards paying the cost of the winding up petition, a bill that could and should have been avoided. We need funds of £800,000 and above so surely the Directors should be putting in at least £200,000 each and not a measly £1,000 , raised again from local people. Good luck to those taking part in the `walk`.

Hold on a minute Eddie - you want the football league to pay for your club, you want the fans to pay for your club and yet the very people that stand to gain from owning AFCB are you and your fellow directors who have publicly stated that they won't pay for owning the club

Bit rich don't you think?

it just infuriates me that eddie howe and his trojans are doing so well on the playing field against all the odds and the restrictions laid on them by the FL ,Yet the people who ultimatly have the clubs future in there hands are doing very little it seems to secure the financial stability of our club.I fear are efforts on the pitch are going to be in vain if this HMRC business does not get sorted and sorted very soon

I doubt If EM and his fellow directors are millionairs, they might to think they are and for us to think they are.

The money needed is small beer to proper millionairs to invest in a new business
All fur coats and no kickers

All EM's properties are properly hocked to the banks and investers, can not sell most of them, count the for sale boards.

Who else would employ EM's son & son in law, what skills did they bring to DC, to be paid big wages.

What happend to Gee Develoments,
another EM & son rip off,
went bust last year.

This is all a con trick to get DC , the building plot

"The supporters let the club go bust"
not the board
