Brett's brace pleases Cherries boss

EDDIE Howe watched Brett Pitman spearhead Cherries’ biggest home win of the season last night – and then vowed to continue to hand his star man more responsibility.

Howe’s charges came back from the disappointing home draw against Macclesfield on Saturday to down Ian Hendon’s Londoners 3-0 and regain second place in the League Two standings.

Steve Fletcher headed home Liam Feeney’s cross just before the hour mark, before Pitman took advantage of some comedy goalkeeping from Bees’ Jake Cole to double Cherries’ advantage minutes later.

Pitman then slotted home Cherries’ third with 15 minutes remaining to leave Howe beaming.

And it was no less than the home side deserved after a first-half performance that had promised much of what was to come during an absorbing clash.

Howe said: “I thought we had a number of chances in the first half and we were disappointed to come in level at half-time.

“I felt we deserved to be at least two goals in front. In the second half we could have rattled up more, but we were certainly happy with the three.

“I wasn’t worried at half-time because we looked like scoring at any time.

“Brett is a livewire and part of his success is that he doesn’t get concerned with missing chances. He just says to himself that he will take the next one.

“He won’t pass the responsibility on and that is a huge strength to have as a centre forward.

“I hope he continues to take that responsibility because I’m only too pleased to let him have it,” added Howe.

Fantastic result last night.
Eight more wins and possibly seven should get us up.
It's all about points on the board now.
with all our injury problems, any chance at all that we can keep Wiggins?
Well done Eddie, Jason and all the players we are proud of your efforts this season.

Alan Connell ,best performance of the season, another two goals from Brett, Ryan Garry coming back early from injury to play a blinder through the pain barrier, a good team performance with no weaknesses....loads of positives.

Both Pitman and Connell did what some of us asked them to do in our posts following Saturday's performance. Pitman not only went for the ball but actually managed to head them and win possession for us but above all he fought for the ball on the ground too. A fantastic win and great performance by all the team. Keep it up and you will beat anyone in this league. Up the Cherries

I have kept laughing at the people that wanted Brett dropped and last night made me realise why.
He could have had 2 hat-tricks but as a good striker kept persevering and was rewarded.
Also pleased Eddie took Fletch and Feeney off. It was job done and no point in keeping them on.
Rochdale and Burys results made it a perfect night for us.
P.s. Please FL can we keep Wiggins!!

Cherrychris75 I hope I am putting the right interpretation to your very good post by saying that what you are being a bit 'tongue in cheek', if that is so, you have to agree that last night it was a Brett without the sulks and one that fought for every ball that came his way. I hope that he keeps that side of his game up fo rthe rest of the season and that he will score a lot more goals. UTC

Good to see Brett grab a couple, but more importantly it was good to see him put in a concerted effort to chase down and defend from the front. I did fear it was going to be another one of those games after he missed 2 glorious chances in the first half. Never fear, it all came good in the end and 5-0 wouldn't have flattered us.
Overall i thought every player did well (Connell did well but MOM again? Come on..) If i had to pick a MOM the stand out player for me was Marvin - he was outstanding; i think the boy gets better with every game. Last night his pace and power had Barnet pulled to bits.
You can't beat DC on a weeknight game, especially when we win so well; shame only 4018 others were there to be entertained. Maybe a few of the fickle waiverers will come back now?

Nonno, yes was tongue in cheek. I can never understand people wanting to drop their top and pretty much only goalscorer because he "sulks".
Superb performance last night. Noone let us down again but at half time I just wondered whether it was going to be one of those nights.
Marv certainly has given Eddie a job to do for Saturday as it looked like old Marvin with his running. Connell looked good and put his foot in as well.
If there is a better central defensive partnership outside the championship than our two then they must be good.
Wenger rated Ryan very highly and it was only his injuries that forced him out. Shows what a run in the team can do, he was awesome again.
Fletch didnt miss a header all evening and Brett showed why so many clubs are watching him.
It's great again being 2nd!!

And as for the crowd. Was always going to be low last night with weather, recent performances and 2 games in a week.
Please can the club do promotions or kids for a quid or give tickets for schools.
The lads deserve a big crowd. They price themselves out and charging a quid with a full paying adult will generate future supporters. All kids would have programmes, go to the shop, use the kiosks.
I dont think any season ticket holder would object if the next 5 were on promotion.
On a different note, I wonder what the Barnet chairman thought being the joke, I mean the FL's League 2 rep

I don't think anyone has criticised Brett as a striker on here they have only criticised his attitude of late and the only reason ppl called for him to be dropped was to rest him after all he's the only player to have not missed a game. All most ppl have asked is for him to play 100% every game like Pearce, Robinson,Garry, not 100% every 3-4 games.
But thats enough on Brett he and the team had a great game last night against probably the worst team we have seen at home this season it could and some would say should have been 5 or 6 nill. Thats how we need to play for the rest of the season if we want to go up.
A huge well done to All the team and management and hoping for good news at the fans forum tomorrow night.

Dare i say it " lets play with only 8 fit players every game " We even had a under 21 international on the bench ! Great team performance that once again showed EH to be a very good manager. Shame about the crowd but we were only playing Barnet lol

Agree with everything said on this post.
When fully fit, repeat fully fit, Marvin is vital to our midfield and allows the more skillful midfielders to do their stuff. It must be very frustrating for the opposition when they think they've got away from him; then he stretches those long legs, somehow gets the ball and usually leaves them in a heap !!
We're edging closer but I still maintain we will be in the play offs and I'll be happy with that.
HOPE I'M WRONG !! UTCIAD !!

nice positive comments at last, agree with all, Brett can be lazy, but his goals are a valuable asset, if he works as hard as he did in every game as last night he could finish up as top scorer in league 2, well done boys.

I don't know what Eddie has said to the team since Saturday's game, but it worked.
Back was the old Cherries team. They worked as a team from the first minute and were unlucky not to score in the first half.
They didn't let that bother them and came out fighting for the second half. As for Fletch, he may be a bit dodgy on his knees but his head is worth it's weight in gold.
Pitman played the best I have seen him for a long time, he really put his heart into the game and deserved the two goals.
The rest of the team really played, it was a joy to watch.
Alan Connell was deservedly the man of the match again, but every Cherries player deserved that accolade last night.
A mention for the defence, Ryan & Pearce are the best and as for Jalal, he's awesome.
Congratulations to all concerned, a wonderful match.
To all those who didn't turn up last night....you don't know what you were missing.

Just a little aside on Shwan Jalal.
When the ball didn't come through as quickly as he thought (North End 2nd half) he headed the ball away, just outside the area, at knee height with the attackers boot about 6 inches away.
Brave and committed.

More important to chase down defenders than to score two goals??? Chukki Eribenne chased down defenders like a nutcase but couldn't put the ball in the back of the net...I'd take a lazy Pitman who scores goals any time. Totally agree about Bartley's performance though, outstanding. UTC!

Give Brett more responsibility?! He already takes the free kicks, penalties, corners....will it be the goal kicks and throw-ins next?

P.S. Was I the only one to laugh out loud at the MoM going to Connell again? He made so many errors last night compared to Pearce for example who did not put a foot wrong and was wrongly booked.

We all know he'll get goals Horder; that isn't the point i'm making.
I believe it's important to play with an intensity high up the pitch starting with the strikers applying pressure on their defenders. When defenders are forced into errors more chances will come for the attacking team to score, and we had more than enough last night.
We did it against Notts County and it forced them into making errors, same as last night. Their centre half was lashing it all over the place. How many corners and throw ins did we win due to forcing them into hurried passes and clearances? More than i could count. If you allow teams to come out from the back with the ball you put your midfield and defence under pressure. This is why i don't like our tactic at defending corners.
Some people have said that Barnet are the worst side we have played this season - I don't agree; we just didn't allow them to play.

UTC!!

No, you would'nt have been the only one laughing at the MoM award to Connell. Where I was sat in the East stand, there was general amazement that he got the award over the likes of Pearce, Bartley or Garry.

Personally, I thought that we were dire in the first half against a really poor side and we spent far too much time lumping it down the middle. In the second half we finally started using a bit of width and it paid real dividends. A great header by Fletch and sharp work by Pitman for his two goals.

A bit saddened by the low crowd though, but I suppose the wet weather kept a few indoors.

I agree with the above observations and just for the record I don't have anything against Brett my point, as many other others, is that I prefer a Brett who works hard and score goals however enough of Brett. I always bang on about the poor referees, I have to say that last night the officials were the best we have had so far.

Great team effort by everyone last night ... was a pleasure to be at Dean Court.

Great to heat that Wiggins has been allowed to re-sign for another 28 days.

Disappointed by the attendance - I know it was a wet Tuesday evening and the second game in 4 days but surely we should be getting more for the sterling effort put in by all around the club? Shame on those who chose not to attend.

Worried about Danny - anyone heard anything about why he was out?

As for games in hand, I'd rather have the points in the bag!! Anyway as far as I can tell the games in hand are the following ...

Tues 2nd March:
Notts County vs Macclesfield
Rochdale vs Rotherham

Tues 9th March:
Bury vs Darlington
Notts County vs Chesterfield

Tues 16th March
Accrington vs Rotherham

Tues 23rd March
Bradford vs Notts County
Rochdale vs Macclesfield

Tues 20th April
Notts County vs Rochdale

... so in fact, several teams at the top are playing each other and other ties are tricky, such as Macclesfield who as a reminder have only lost 4 away from home in the league all season. It'll be interesting in the shake out!!

UP THE CHERRIES!!!

also agree with comments about the crowd i def think we need to make more noise, get that drum going for longer. Barnet were shocking but fair play to their supporters they didnt stop singing and could be heard easily considering there were hardly any.
