Connell and Pitman keep Cherries top

ALAN Connell hit his first league goal since rejoining Cherries as Eddie Howe’s men kept hold of the League Two top spot in style this afternoon.

The cultured forward, replacing the rested Steve Fletcher in the starting line-up, rewarded manager Howe’s faith by scoring an excellent opener as Cherries saw off lowly Grimsby Town at Dean Court.

After Connell had opened the scoring, Paul Linwood’s own goal doubled the advantage, the unfortunate Grimsby defender enduring a birthday to forget.

Linwood atoned for his error by pulling a goal back on 50 minutes, but Cherries had the final say as Brett Pitman, who had a hand in all three Cherries goals, struck a spectacular overhead kick to secure maximum points.

Cherries boss Howe made one change to the team which beat Accrington Stanley last week, with Connell’s start giving veteran frontman Fletcher a well-deserved rest.

Grimsby, led by caretaker manager Neil Woods following Mick Newell’s recent exit, went into the game in terrible form, having lost four successive league matches.

They could have taken a big step towards enhancing that record after just seven minutes as the first good opportunity of the game fell to the visitors.

Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro was the man who found himself clear on goal, but he fired wide under pressure from the onrushing Shwan Jalal.

Cherries soon settled and quickly began to enjoy the lion’s share of the possession, although Grimsby were proving far from easy to break down.

With Saints loan defender Olly Lancashire performing strongly at the heart of the Mariners’ defence, Cherries failed to carve out any clear-cut chances until the 27th minute.

Howe’s decision to shift Liam Feeney and Mark Molesley to opposite flanks almost paid dividends when Feeney beat his man and delivered an excellent cross to the near post. Top scorer Pitman met the ball perfectly, only to see Nick Colgan produce an excellent save to palm his header to safety.

But Cherries only had to wait seconds for a deserved opener when Connell demonstrated perfectly why he was handed a starting berth.

Receiving the ball from strike partner Pitman, Connell turned sharply and curled a quite majestic right-foot shot high to Colgan’s left from 15 yards, leaving the Grimsby skipper with no chance.

Cherries sensed the opportunity to extend their advantage and they seized it by doubling the lead on 34 minutes.

Captain Danny Hollands sent Pitman racing down the right and, when the forward sent over a low cross, Linwood clumsily turned the ball into his own net, with Hollands closing in.

As the action continued at great pace, Cherries were given a warning not to get complacent, with Jalal forced into a brave block as a loose ball broke to the lively Peter Bore.

Jalal produced an excellent save four minutes after the break to deny Adrian Forbes, but he was powerless to stop Grimsby when they successfully pulled a goal back on 50 minutes.

With Cherries failing to clear a corner, Linwood atoned for his earlier mistake by heading home, with the ball appearing to hit Ryan Garry on its way past the diving Jalal.

An edgy period followed, with Grimsby upping their efforts in the hope of securing a positive result.

Jalal continued his impressive afternoon by holding on to Akpa Akpro’s 67th-minute lob as Cherries struggled to gain the sort of control they enjoyed during the opening period.

Pitman was presented with an opportunity to settle the nerves and seal the points on 70 minutes, but Colgan got down sharply to hold the striker’s low effort.

Peter Sweeney’s sweet strike gave Cherries and the nervous home support a scare as it flew narrowly over from long range.

Howe called on Fletcher with 13 minutes remaining as Cherries looked to defend their slender lead and the giant targetman didn’t disappoint, as he provided the assist as the hosts put the result beyond doubt.

The 37-year-old flicked the ball on perfectly and Pitman did the rest, his overhead kick capping a good afternoon for the Dean Court outfit.

What a fantastic win. I am only sorry that due to pressing commitments in Germany I missed the game. Well done to Eddie and the team. Come on you cherries

Another good win, with flashes of decent football. A blustery wind and a dreadful pitch made the ball difficult to control. It was a lottery as to which way a ball would bounce and I have never seen so many missed headers and such poor control of the ball. The Groundsman left last month - was he replaced.

We made heavy weather of a game we should have won easily. Grimsby were awful. Stout defence, plenty of effort and that was it.
We will need to "up" our game next week against Rochdale, despite their loss today.

The pitch did not look as good as always but i didn`t know the groundsman had left. I thought we used Southamptons ? Overall a result that we expected abd it was nice to see a good strong bench. Lets hope Mitchells son does not get a seat on it. If the other article is to believed i can see Mitchells reasons for advertising our management team. If the article about Weymouth is untrue then Mitchell should contact the Police.

I totally agree with this and it will take sustained promotional push to up the attendances. solid core fans watch through thick and thin, success breeds interest and only then will fickle fans turn up...

There IS someone trying to put a heap of dung at Eddie Mitchell's door. Indeed, it is the same person who attempted to besmurch Adam Murry's name earlier in the year. It is the same person behind the ursine figure that posts on internet forums while masking where the posts come from.
The culprit is someone with football connections who has been at a succession of failed clubs. This someone has a plan to get hold of Bournemouth (partly by trying to discredit the 3Ms and Steve sly) and put us into administration again.
The someone has an accomplice (who actually does all the dirty work at the keyboard) who is quite capable of faking an e-mail.
The sad thing is that this someone actually needs and wants Bournemouth to fail. No supporter would want that and this interloper is certainly no fan of our club.

I too would be disappointed if I thought the attendance down at DC yesterday was actuallly 5,270, which was the official figure given. However I think the attendance was far higher then the offical figure given. All the stands looked pretty well poppulated to me apart from the away fans' part. I think the actual attendance was between 6 and 7k!

I must agree, I was surprised looking around the stands that the official attendance was only 5,270. Mind you, the booking office and ticketing proceedure seems to be run in such an disorganised and ineffecient manner that I wouldn`t be surprised if they were to just hazard a guess come 3 o`clock.

Great result though. I thought Liam was a class above and well deserved his man of the match award.

Security word LINE-BEST sums up his day!

The effect of this success, if any, will not be felt until next season and only if we get promotion, preferably through the play-offs at Wembley.
Many years ago I asked my brother if he would take his two sons to AFCB a few times. "Why do I want to take them to that rubbish" was the answer. Lets face it, in the past, on occasions, that's been quite an accurate assessment. They follow Liverpool and THE ONLY TIME THEY HAVE SEEN THEM IS THE FRIENDLY DOWN HERE. My future son-in-law also follows Liverpool. Born and bred in Bournemouth. Why? Because some young lads like to associate themselves with success. Simple as that. Also, a great number of people have moved to this town and they support their home town club and encourage their kids to do the same. The reason why the Grimsby game was sold out is simple. The "floaters" that turned up on the day thought it might be thae last league game at DC for many years.
We really need someone like Harry to boost the interest. That's the best way.

i went to the game yesterday and was impressed with the way we played for most of the game with a small blip in the second for grimsbys goal but seemed to pick it up soon afterwards.Fletch seemed as awesome as ever in particular his treatment of colgan the head-butt simply AWESOME. IF we dont have a full house next week against ROCHDALE it will br very dissappointing indeed.

Put another way a half full ground would have been circa 4,600-4,700.Imagine a half full ground and add an extra 500 or so to equal the stated attendance, now compare that to the actual crowd we saw in the ground, definately a`slight` difference.

Chesterfield away in the first round of the F.A. Cup.
A quick return chance to show them how we really can play !
Just a shame it's such a horrible drive to their ground at the moment.

Was like a skating rink or are we introducing skate-ball ?????
