Oakmeadians coach James Croker believes that the next five games will shape the club’s season following a comfortable seven-try 44-5 home romp over Wootton Bassett in South West One East.

The Meyrick Parkers scored tries through Harvey Bell (two), Tim Flower (two), Mike Notobartolo, Eroni Ciriki and Will Samuels, with Jamie Tryska adding three conversions and one penalty.

Their fifth victory in a row kept Oaks up among fellow front runners Cheltenham and Marlow on 10 points at the top of the table, but Croker knows there are tougher tests to come.

He said: “We played for 40 minutes on Saturday the type of rugby we are trying to play as a team.

“Next week at home to Reading Abbey we’ll try to play 60 minutes of that rugby and then we’ll try to get to 80 the week after when we’re at home to Buckingham and continue to be realistic about our targets.

“I’m not surprised we’ve started so well because we always knew we have the strength of squad to be competitive. The lads have acquitted themselves adequately to the higher league.

“It’s still not at the level me and backs’ coach Brendon Daniel want technically, tactically and concentration wise.

“But as far as determination and commitment goes I think the boys are right up there.”

Croker, who made a rare appearance in the front row because of injuries, added: “In the next five weeks the top four all play each other.

“After Reading Abbey and Buckingham, we’ve got Cheltenham away, Walcot at home and Marlow away taking us up to November 7.

“That will be a real indicator of where we want to be.

“We always said the league would settle down after the first five games and it has, but we always knew the second five games were the important moulding weeks for us as far as going up against the likes of Cheltenham and Marlow.”

Looking back on the big win over Wootton, Croker continued: “It was comfortable but frustrating.

“We had two guys sin-binned and the penalty count against us in the second half was 14-4.

Will Croker and Shane Coughlan got sin-binned and we were down to six in the pack for 15 minutes in the second half, but even when we only had 13 on the pitch we were in total control of the game.”
