Cherries: Hard Times in the Hunt for Holland

WHAT have Eddie Hunt and Matt Holland got in common?

The answer, of course, is that neither of them plays for or coaches Cherries – but try telling that to the Times and the Darlington match programme.

Few League Two clubs can boast of being taken seriously by the national press and TV in terms of column inches and screen minutes and on the rare occasion the bods in London have sat up and taken notice, it’s been at times of great turmoil and uncertainty.

Which, of course, has been most of the past 15 years or so at AFC Bournemouth, but with the new-found positivity searing through the veins of Dean Court, the pack either don’t want to know, or are simply plain ignorant – as Monday’s Times report showed.

“Brett Pitman continued his rich form with his fifth and sixth goals of the season for Bournemouth against a Darlington side still awaiting their first win,” the report in The Game read. So far, so good.

“‘Over the last three games we haven’t played as well as we can, but we’ve ground out results,’ Matt Holland, the Bournemouth captain, said.”

Close, but no cigar I’m afraid.

And as for the Quakers official programme, referring to Howe as ‘Hunt’ throughout a piece with the Cherries boss was nothing short of embarrassing.

The Dean Court faithful have also been quick to dub the BBC’s Football League Show the ‘Notts County Show’ as Sven-Goran Eriksson’s arrival alongside Sol Campbell at Meadow Lane continues to make Auntie come over all funny.

The fans, quite rightly after years and years of having absolutely nothing to shout about, simply want the achievements of Howe’s threadbare squad recognised on a national platform.

But with Howe’s success creating, at the moment, only a small swell around the feet of the national commentators, Cherries have been allowed to go quietly about their business.

You can be sure that when the annual managerial merry-go-round spins into action just before Christmas, Howe will almost certainly attract some attention – especially if his side’s stunning start to the campaign continues well into the winter months.

So, let Sol and Sven hog the front and back pages – little old Cherries can wait for the plaudits when they matter most in May.

Neil, i hope you havent applied for a job at the Times?
To be honest do we want the press pack around at the minute? Yes it would be nice to get some attention but it's nice doing what we're doing. I work in Southampton and everyone knows me as the cherries fan and I get congratulated every week for our performances. Dont think they realise i'm not playing!! Shows we're noticed though, good old Jeff on Sky Sports always praises us. Lets just continue what we're doing and let Notts County make their own downfall.
Just one thing about the BBC football show. Surely Steve Claridge should mention us at least once a week!! Even if not a full Notts County style report

Last Evening I was compelled to email ‘5 live’ to express my displeasure in the fact that praises were being heaped on Leeds for having overcome points deduction and now being on top of League 1. I pointed out that AFCB had a even bigger millstone round their necks and not only escape the drop out of the league but are on top of League 2. Needless to say it was ignored as far as I know because they did not even send the customary email acknowledging receipt. Oh well s…f tem for all we care!

Notts County will hog the news, with the FL investigating Munto Finance and Cambell walking out on a £10,000,000 contract its meat and drink for the media. It is probably better for us to have a low profile any how, it's going to be hard enough to fight off the predators, particularly given our continuing parlous financial condition, without inviting attention.

mightyreds, Christchurch says...

Is it not true that the Munto Finance group are to buy League two from the Football League and ensure Notts County win the league similar to the Romanian sides of the 80's ??
I understand that any side that tops the league will automatically have their names changed to Notts County, this could be a reason why the national press are having trouble when naming our current Manager or team Captain??

Lets just keep a low profile, not worry about the coverage, keep doing what we are currently doing, else there will be a DC sale of players if too much attention is drawn by National Media... I predict 2 going soon, which will add funds to the much needed coffers !! don't agree but that seems to be the football business now days rather than keeping your assets and earning from them.

Why do you predict 2 players going soon??? surely the earliest any player could be sold is January and by then we will have more of an idea if this season is going to be a realistic promotion push plus we will know if the embargo is lifted by then.
There appears to be a continued air of doom and gloom on here even though we are flying high and the club has responded to fans wishes etc, is it because of the years of problems or are we just a miserable bunch at heart??

Neil you do make me laugh! I think it's going to be funny come May when we have won the league by a mile and the media (echo and solent excluded) suddenly realise we exist! I like the anonymity to be fair because it means less sharks circling to try and steal our players and Eddie.

Just cynical and I dare I say it more realistic than we were. We know we have no money, that there is a petition to be heard in less than two weeks time and sadly our experience is that we always sell our best players and see our better Managers "poached". Little wonder that so many of us see the glass half empty. At the moment, on the field, it seems just too good to be true, off it the opposite!

Our better managers poached?? when did that happen then?? Harry left with a golden handshake and SO'D jumped ship when it was sinking, I have yet to see one of our better managers poached in all the years I have been a Cherries fan.
As for players yes we sell our better players as do all lower league clubs but that's not on the cards until at the very earliest January unless something goes very wrong with that petition, and as I said by then we will know just where we are heading this season, still no need to start expecting players to be sold and Eddie to be on his way though!!
On the field is better than expected given the embargo but is no real surprise given that we were top of the league for the second half of last season, let's not write the club off just as things could be turning around!!

I have probably been a supporter too long, but Bill McGarry, John Bond, were approached , Harry ( was "invited") to apply for the West Ham job as was S'OD by Doncaster, both may well have left anyhow. The fact is the a good Manager is the key to success and this is now generally recognized and we are lucky enough to have one.No one is writing the Club off, just seeing the situation as it is. It must be a fustrating job for any ambitious Manager.

If we don't get promotion at the first attempt, the vultures will chase EM and JT and they will be gone and I wouldn't blame them at all. Horrible to contemplate but that's life. Does anyone think that So'D left us THEN talked to Doncaster?
John Bond is worse. He took half the team with him. Approached? Of course not!!
Yes Mighty Reds things have been turned round and I pray they continue but football really is a funny old game. My glass is half full AND half empty.
I heard earlier on The radio that the gin swiller in chief (Mawhinney) has written to the Formula one controlling body to ask for "more details" of the QPR owner's life ban from the sport. Well at least he's put pen to paper which is better than normal. Without QPR and Notts County (now minus Campbell) who can he now suck up to? Try a real football club (AFCB) maybe.

You are assuming dc that Eddie and JT want to jump ship even if the vultures do come calling. We have a history of managers being in the job for long periods and we have a manager who is a Cherries man to the core, I don't think for one minute he will jump ship at the first time of asking and who's to say he wont get us promoted, we are top you know!!

Sorry DC but can't let those comments go by on the manager front, John Bond started the financial problems the club is still trying to get out of now and SO'D left when he saw the writing was on the wall, approached yes but poached I hardly think so, and if they are the best managers we've had then god help us all!!

Harold walker started it mighty, certainly JB carried it on with inflated wage bills but we got good money for supermac when he left and had crowds of 20,000 plus.As with every season a small windfall has never been enough to put us in the black.Too many players sold with appearance clauses that never came to fruition.800,000 for parkinson, where did that go?200,000 for vokes was a joke, hayter, stock,fe
eney, elliott, those 5 alone should of brought in 3 million based on talent, unfortunately smaller clubs like ours will always be easy pickings for bigger clubs.Bristol Rovers are the only smaller team that have done well when selling players, amazing how many strikers they have got good money for in the last ten years or so.Still, thats all in the past,we have got potentially the best squad of players in this league albeit a small one.Onwards and upwards.COME ON YOU MIGHTY REDS.

Guys,
1st time posting on here.Would like to say what a great start to the season you're having.
Unfortunately in the real world if a bigger club (one with cash to splash say) came calling I feel EH & JT would be off.
Also someone mentioned earlier about having to sell a couple of players, think you'll find a couple of clubs are sniffing round Pitman already.
Sec word "have-lose" sums it up.

I think you're right in what you say. However, it would be a massive wrench for Eddie to want to go and it would also have to be a big jump up in the FL ladder (A bigger club in the Championship at least) and i think, whilst doing brilliantly at the mo it's still too early for one of the bigger boys to take a chance on him, i certainly can't see it happening this season and maybe not even next, depending on how we do.
Same goes for the young players we have. It would have to be a great career move for them to want out, (Jason Pearce also being linked with other clubs if the press are to be believed) and it is inevitable they will go if a big career opportunity arose and who can blame them? - I just hope we get decent money for them if and when the time comes.

I wouldn't be so sure that Eddie would be off that quick, he signed a long term contract and would need a full season before anyone took a chance on such a young manager, as for Pitman, that's old news Brighton were interested before the season started, when you are top people will take a look but as I said January is the earliest that could happen and by then we will have a much better idea of where the season is heading and indeed any of our better players should things fall away.
