Non-league: Dual role for Ferrett

BASHLEY star Chris Ferrett has described a future move into management as a “possibility” – but he is more than happy to solely focus on his new player-coach role for now.

The former Cherries defender, who turns 33 in February, was handed the opportunity to pass on his experience to his team-mates when boss Steve Riley gave him coaching responsibilities during pre-season.

And Ferrett, who is set to feature when Bash host Clevedon Town at the Recreation Ground tomorrow (3pm), is enjoying the challenge.

He told the Echo: “I’m not getting any younger and Steve offered me the opportunity and I’m certainly looking forward to it.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to play under some decent managers in the professional game and in non-league.

“I worked with Sean O’Driscoll for quite a long period. He was a great coach and you only have to look and see how well he’s doing now. From such a young age then, I was still learning things.”

Ferrett, who also pointed to the likes of Liam Daish and Nick Holmes when asked to pick out some of the managers he had gleaned tips from, is aiming to continue his playing career for as long as possible.

“I have to take each season as it comes now,” he admitted.

“I’ve nearly played 700 games already, so my body has taken a bit of a pounding and I’ll know when the time is right. I’ll keep trying to play.”

Asked whether a move into management would be of interest, Ferrett added: “Possibly, but to start with you need to learn as much as you can.

“Apart from the matchday scenario, there’s so much more that goes with it, like the politics, which you don’t always know as a player.

“There’s a lot more work to do behind the scenes. It might be a natural progression one day, but I’m just enjoying the coaching side.”

Bash boss Riley is hoping to have Mark Gamble, who netted 10 goals in pre-season, available for tomorrow’s match after he missed the team’s win over Swindon Supermarine on Tuesday because of an Achilles injury. Captain Paul Gazzard (groin) is also expected to return.
