CHERRIES legend Steve Fletcher has tipped Jeff Goulding to forge a good career for himself after the striking prospect agreed a fresh deal with the club.

Goulding, 25, has decided to remain at Dean Court for another season and fellow forward Fletcher believes he could be a key man.

Fletcher, Cherries’ first choice targetman, said: “He’s played a lot of his early career in the non-league and this is a good step up for him.

“Hopefully I can help him with his game.

“Eddie (Howe, manager) asked if I could help him when I came in, but it was tough because we had two games a week and we hardly had chance to breath!

“Hopefully, in pre-season we’ll start on an even keel. I’d definitely like to help Jeff in any way I can.”

Cherries’ record appearance-maker Fletcher, who scored four goals after re-joining the club from Crawley Town in January, added: “I would love to help Jeff because I think he has half a chance of being a very successful footballer.”

Goulding became the fifth of the club’s out-of-contract sextet to agree terms – in principle – with Cherries, following in the footsteps of Ryan Pryce, Ryan Garry, Josh McQuoid and Joe Partington.

Warren Cummings has also been offered a new deal by boss Howe.

Meanwhile, Goulding has revealed he is working hard ahead of pre-season in a bid to force himself into Howe’s plans.

The young forward is pulling out all the stops to try to get himself in good shape before reporting to training at the beginning of next month.

“I relaxed in May and went away, but in June I’ve done a lot of gym work,” said Goulding.

“I feel really good and have been working hard on every aspect to make myself that bit better.”

Goulding, who will be vying with Fletcher, Brett Pitman and youngster Steve Hutchings for Cherries’ attacking berths, added: “You’re never really sure where you’re at compared to everyone else during pre-season.

“But we’ve got some big Premier League clubs to play and hopefully they will bring good players down.

“I’m sure by the end of pre-season we’ll know where we are.”

Goulding made 30 appearances last season, many of which came as a substitute.
