BOURNEMOUTH Dolphins’ 12-year-old Amelia Maughan reached three finals when she made her international debut in Greece – one of them in an event she had never swum before.
The youngest member of a 35-strong England team came fourth, seventh and sixth respectively in the 50, 100 and 400m freestyle at an International Invitation Meet in Thessalonika.
It was her first attempt at the 400m and she clocked a long-course 4:36 in the heat and 4:32.2 in the final.
This immediately makes her the second fastest 12-year-old in Britain as well as the fastest in the three shorter freestyle distances in which she was slightly slower than her best with 27.01, 58.48 and 2:10.12.
Dolphins coach Graham Bassi said: “She did very well. The competition followed an intensive training week on an adult programme in an old pool – and she stood up to it better than most.”
