HONEST Ryan Garry carried the can for Cherries’ latest defeat and then admitted it was time for Eddie Howe’s men to start “walking the walk”.

Garry took the rap for allowing Paul Furlong to head the winner as Cherries suffered a 1-0 reverse against Barnet at Underhill on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has been a cornerstone of the Cherries defence in recent weeks and turned in another solid display alongside fellow linchpin Jason Pearce.

However, Garry blotted his copybook when Barnet’s on-loan striker Furlong escaped his attentions and headed home Kenny Gillet’s cross seven minutes into the second half.

Defeat left Cherries four points clear of the relegation zone ahead of today’s showdown with League Two table-toppers Brentford at Dean Court (3pm).

Garry told the Daily Echo: “It was a game of two very different halves. We controlled the first half and were very comfortable but didn’t start the second half with the same oomph.

“We went a goal down, which was my fault, and couldn’t get a reply. It was very frustrating from the team’s point of view and from a personal point of view.

“I didn’t mark him properly and everything was wrong. Football is a harsh game and you get punished. I got punished and, ultimately, it cost the team and I’m very sorry for that.

“If I had been marking him properly, he wouldn’t have scored. My mistake cost the team and it wasn’t acceptable. I feel responsible and gutted.”

Although defeats for relegation rivals Chester and Grimsby softened the blow for Cherries, Garry is hoping Howe’s men can bounce back against high-flying Brentford.

He added: “Other results went our way so we had a bit of luck. But we can’t go into games thinking that if we lose, the other results may go our way because it can turn around very quickly.

“Every game is huge and I’m hoping we can get something from Brentford because we need it.

“We lost at their place on Boxing Day when they scored two headers so we owe them one.

“They are a very good team and are top of the table for a reason so we’ve got to be at it again.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves, not other results. We need to pick up some points. I don’t want it to go to the last game of the season.

“I believe we can stay up and so does every one in the changing room and that’s what’s important. But it’s all very well talking the talk – we’ve got to walk the walk as well.”

Cherries are hoping Mark Molesley could return against Brentford after the midfielder missed the trip to Barnet due to illness.
