GARRY May has a simple message for fans of newly-formed Bournemouth Buccaneers – support our junior team so we can have a longer future than just one year.

Pirates chiefs Matt Ford and Giles Hartwell have taken the brave step of entering a side in the newly-created third-tier National League.

Although run by the Poole promotion, and hosting their home fixtures at Wimborne Road, the Buccaneers will race under the banner of neighbouring town Bournemouth.

May, the ex-Weymouth and Crayford rider, has been installed as team manager after successful spells in the role with Poole’s Academy team and at Somerset in the Premier League.

He said: “With less Elite League fixtures and no Craven Shield this year, Matt needed a bigger fixture list and launching a new junior side is probably the best way of doing it.

“There are going to be some good riders in our team, and in this league, which was the old Conference and is very competitive.

“We’ve already got Jay Herne, Kyle Newman and Jerran Hart as confirmed starters and I’m expecting to tie up the rest of the team by the end of next week.

“Matt and Giles have said if the team pays for itself this year we’ll carry on with it next year.

“So let’s make sure we all support it and get enough people through the gate to ensure the Buccaneers can carry on in 2010.”

May added: “We’re in the National League to win it, and the racing should be great.

“Anyone can pop out of the gate in front in the third tier because they’re all going for it and learning.

“But it won’t be like racing in the Southern Area League or the British Academy. It will be a couple of steps up from that.

“There won’t be any wobblers. It’s going to be proper racing.

“We’ve got a couple of riders who are as good as Jay lined up as our other heat leaders so we’re aiming to win the league.

“Anyone who saw Weymouth race their way to the Conference title last year will know this level is a good level.

“All the riders we’ve got lined up rode at this level in 2008, so we should have a good chance of winning the league.

“They all rode the tracks last year, so it’s not as though we’re going into this with riders who won’t know the tracks.

“Only one won’t have ridden regularly, so we’re gunning to win silverware. We’re not going to be also-rans.

“We’re putting a team together to win things and get people through the gate to watch us as well.”

Buccaneers will line up against the likes of Weymouth, Isle of Wight, Plymouth, Scunthorpe, Buxton, Rye House and King’s Lynn in a probably 18-match league programme, culminating in title play-offs.

They stage their first home meeting on Thursday, April 23 against Isle of Wight in a challenge after getting the go ahead from Poole Stadium landlords over the weekend.
