CHERRIES are hoping to complete the signing of Salisbury City striker Matt Tubbs ahead of tomorrow’s visit to League Two rivals Grimsby.

The 24-year-old, who was raised in Verwood, could be set to pen a loan deal after linking up with Jimmy Quinn’s squad in training at Canford School this morning.

Tubbs, who is known to Quinn and his assistant Jason Tindall from their time in the Conference, netted against Cherries in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Dean Court on Monday.

And with Jeff Goulding and Brett Pitman both likely to miss Cherries’ trip to Blundell Park due to injury, Quinn is desperate to bolster his striking resources.

Released by Cherries as a youngster, Tubbs joined Bolton Wanderers as a trainee before signing for Salisbury in October 2003.

A firm favourite at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium, he has been made available for transfer as part of a cost-cutting exercise by the Wiltshire outfit.

Tubbs, an England non-league international, helped Salisbury clinch their place in the Conference when he scored the winner in their play-off final against Braintree Town in May 2007.

He became the first Salisbury player to turn professional for the club when he signed a three-year deal in the summer of 2007.

See tomorrow's Daily Echo for more on this story.

Oh great, if he can score against the second last team in the league he must be good!
Salisbury are "getting rid of him as a cost cutting exercise"!
We are now taking on non league rejects!
He will feel right at home next year!

Is this the delivery we were promised?

A player who has scored 1 goal in 15 games and thats against conference league strugglers.

How long are the supporters of our club going to put up with this charade of a club ownership.

More spin than the labour party and no delivery what so ever.

Can we buy tickets by debit/credit cards yet?

Travel coaches cancelled.

Is this what we were promised?

Even Crawley decided against taking tubbs on loan, implying he would be a bench warmer.

QUOTE FROM CRAWLEY TOWN Nov 13th 2008

“We looked at Matt Tubbs as well to come on loan but if we brought him in would he play? We can’t contemplate doing that unless you are going to play him. We are always looking but two weeks ago, when we had five or six guys injured or playing when they were not fit, I felt we had to act.”

Shame Goulding is injured. All change! This front line of ours is becoming a group of strangers playing together. Can't wait for the line up for the next game!

I totally disagree, I felt it was a wrong move letting him go in the first place. He has been quite prolific in the past I think, so why not give him a chance, can't be worse than those in the side now. Quinn is unable to attract anyone of a better pedigree, he has tried tirelessly to no avail.

cant be any worse then pitman, we need some width in the team, grimsby a cup final. lose and were down with this squad of players. surely redknapps got some young wingers with pace in his reserves who need experiance. come on lets get behind the team. up the cherries

Here we go yet again !!! Another poor quality signing !!!

Has it occured to any of you people out there and to JQ that if he had any 'zeal' and creditable ability he would have left Salisbury to a higher League club A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!!

I repeat the words of Alec Stock who stated in one his programme notes during the late 70's that if you have too many players from non-league that is where you will eventually end up (in non- League)...I wonder !! As er are not looking like hurting anyone in this division. We are not making any headway and look destined to the Pink Circle Ford Secondhand Spare Part League next season.

Wake up !!!!!

no cash- no team- and no bloody ambition, this just about sums up the non-league mentality that exsists within our club,

isnt this is getting a bit of a joke now?
how many more strikers do we need?
pitman, bradbury, goulding, connell, mcquoid, symes, and now tubbs. thats 7 distinctly average strikers in a system playing one up front we should play mcqouid! hes so much better than quinn probably thinks.

Any doubts that lingered re Quinn's competence has gone. McQuoid should play - not Tubbs and if Quinn didn't know about the drinking habits of certain team members until now - then he must live in his own little World. There have been numerous postings on this site re one of his "Strikers?" which he has chosen to ignore in the past. Lose tomorrow and he should go.
