Watt relieved over foot injury

INJURED Davey Watt is confident his Poole team-mates can successfully cover for his absence when they host title rivals Ipswich tonight (7.30pm).

The popular Aussie believes he may have sustained muscle damage in his right foot after it went into Lukas Dryml's back wheel during Pirates' 47-43 defeat at Peterborough on Monday.

Although X-rays at Poole Hospital yesterday revealed no broken bones, Castle Cover Pirates' heat leader sits out Witches' visit when his side will use rider replacement.

He will undergo physio instead and hopes to be back for the Draper Tools' Four-Team Tournament at Poole next Wednesday.

Watt said: "I've said it all along that all the Poole boys have been able to cover for injuries when someone has been out this season.

"So I'm sure they will be able to cope without me tonight.

"I'll be there, but just won't be riding, and I hope the boys will be able to win without me."

Watt added: "I'm extremely relieved I haven't broken any bones.

"There is a lot to race for over the rest of this year and it was going to be a shame if I'd have had to miss those meetings because of such a silly little incident.

"At the moment, I can't put any weight on my foot. I can't bend my toes too much because it's all pretty swollen still.

"I'll leave it for a week or so, and probably ride at Poole next week. That's my goal, to try and ride then.

"My foot has just been squashed by Lukas's spokes and back wheel. It's not cut open and bones aren't broken.

"I think it's just muscle damage and things like that, so I'll see the physio and see what he thinks and where to go from there.

"I'll probably rest it for a couple of days and start work on it after that. The physio will be able to point me on the right course and start making it better again.

"It (Watt's right foot) has never really been good over the last couple of years because of the way I broke it in 2004, when it was all mangled up.

"We just need to make it as best as we can as quickly as we can."

Ipswich, still chasing a top-two finish, arrive in Dorset buoyed by a comprehensive 50-40 victory at Wimborne Road on May 21.

They are the only team Poole have not beaten at home this season. However, table-topping Pirates triumphed 51-41 at Foxhall on June 9.

Ipswich's hopes of a second triumph at Poole have nose-dived though as they go into the meeting without Robert Miskowiak, who has been told by Polish club Ostrow he has to practice with them today ahead of a match for them tomorrow.

James Holder could fill in for the Pole, while Jarek Hampel has flu and is replaced by guest Chris Harris.

Pirates: 1 C Holder, 2 M Zetterstrom, 3 B Pedersen, 4 A Skornicki, 5 R/r for D Watt, 6 F Eriksson, 7 D Davidsson.

Ipswich: 1 P Swiderski, 2 T Kroner, 3 (guest) C Harris, 4 J Holder (probable), 5 R Schlein, 6 S Johnston, 7 C Schramm.
