CHERRIES star Ryan Garry is poised to become the second member of Kevin Bond's squad to agree fresh terms with the club this summer.

The injury-plagued central defender is set to follow Lee Bradbury's lead after agreeing, in principle, to sign a short-term contract.

Garry was restricted to just nine appearances in his debut season after breaking his right leg just seven games into his Cherries career in September.

And mindful of his previous injury record, Cherries have again erred on the side of caution by initially offering him a six-month contract.

A former England youth international, Garry joined Cherries following his release by Arsenal where he had spent four years battling problems with his shins.

Cherries boss Kevin Bond told the Daily Echo: "We've got an agreement in place with Ryan and it's just a matter of getting him to come down to put pen to paper.

"We've agreed something along the same lines as last season and he's comfortable with that and so are we. We are looking forward to seeing him have a sustained injury-free period."

Having progressed through the Academy ranks at Highbury, Garry was handed his Premiership debut by Arsene Wenger at 19.

But just weeks after winning the last of his nine caps for England, he discovered he had sustained multiple stress fractures to both shins.

And despite being given the opportunity to resurrect his career at Dean Court, Garry was rocked when he fractured his tibia during a collision with Northampton's Andy Kirk just a month into last season.

Bond added: "Ryan's injuries have set him back from playing at a good level and that's really been his only problem.

"There is no doubt that when he was at Arsenal, they really rated him but he just couldn't keep himself fit and that was the reason they didn't hang in there with him. They've got an abundance of players and it wasn't through any lack of ability.

"He needs to have an injury-free period and I think that would help him enormously because he could then go on to have a career for himself.

"We nearly got him going last season. He played the first few games for us and everybody could see what a good player he is. But, unfortunately, he sustained an injury which wasn't related to any of the previous problems he'd had.

"We're happy to go along with the view that it was a one-off and hope he comes back to repay our faith in him and also to get the career he so badly wants."
