GEORGE Webb faces an anxious wait to discover whether his season may have come to a premature end after sustaining a foot injury during Cherries' 2-0 defeat by Pontin's Holidays Combination rivals Yeovil yesterday.

The teenage midfielder was stretchered off after being caught by a full-blooded tackle from Yeovil defender Owen Irish midway through the second half at Dean Court.

And although it was initially feared the first-year apprentice had fractured two metatarsal bones in his right foot, preliminary X-rays at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital revealed he had only sustained bruising.

However, Cherries physio Steve Hard will continue to monitor Webb over the next few days and the youngster may be referred for a follow-up scan.

Cherries reserve team boss Eddie Howe said: "Everybody has got their fingers crossed for George and hopefully he will make a speedy recovery.

"He came off worse in what was a wholehearted tackle that you rarely see in reserve games but I don't think it was malicious at all."

Webb's injury compounded a bad day at the office for a Cherries side which included only two professionals - Ryan Garry and Brett Pitman - together with no fewer than nine youth team players.

The Glovers line-up, meanwhile, was packed with experience and former Charlton, Wolves and West Ham star Shaun Newton played a starring role in their victory.

Former Cherries loan man Jean Francois-Christophe nodded home Newton's free kick for the opener after Garry had been harshly penalised for the flimsiest of fouls in the 49th minute.

Newton then had an effort ruled out for offside before Cherries paid for some non-existent marking when Robert Fitzgerald grabbed a second after 61 minutes.

The only real plus for Cherries was for Garry to complete another 90 minutes following his return from a long injury layoff, although the defender did suffer a split lip after taking an elbow to the mouth.

Howe added: "We didn't play well and Yeovil were more physical and experienced than us. They were probably the better team and deserved to win."

Cherries: Pryce, Reeve, Newton, Rose, Garry, Partington, McQuoid, Webb (Queree, 69), Pitman, Davidson (Cooper, 65), Preston (Wilson, 65).
