CHERRIES star David Brooks has been named Wales player of the year.

The 21-year-old, who scooped the FAW prize as voted for by members of The Red Wall fan group, recorded an impressive double - having also picked up the young player of the year accolade.

He said: "It has been a whirlwind season, making the transition to the Premier League and playing for Wales.

“It's been a really good year and one many wouldn't have anticipated and hopefully it can get even better by the end of the year."

Former winners of the national accolade include the likes of Wales legends Paul Jones, Mark Hughes, Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale.

Other nominations for the senior prize included Bale, Harry Wilson, Ethan Ampadu, Connor Roberts and Brooks’s Cherries team-mate Chris Mepham.

Former Manchester City youngster Brooks has taken the Premier League by storm this campaign having signed for Cherries from Sheffield United for an initial £10million last summer.

He has made 26 Premier League appearances, scoring six times and registering four assists.

The Warrington-born star qualifies for the nation through his mother Cathryn.

He could be involved when Giggs’s side host Slovakia in a Euro 2020 qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Cherries striker Dominic Solanke came off the bench for the final 18 minutes of England under-21s’ 1-1 draw with Poland at Ashton Gate.

Sebastian Szymanski's outrageous strike denied the Young Lions victory in their countdown to Euro 2019.

The Legia Warsaw midfielder's stunning 30-yard free-kick earned Poland a draw after the hosts failed to build on Dominic Calvert-Lewin's early opener.

Solanke will hope to be involved once again when Boothroyd’s side host Germany in a friendly at Vitality Stadium on Tuesday - before the summer tournament in Italy and San Marino.

Defender Nathan Ake was an unused substitute as the Netherlands hammered Belarus 4-0 in Rotterdam.

Ake will hope to be included when Ronald Koeman’s troops host Germany in Amsterdam on Sunday.

Midfiedler Jefferson Lerma played 90 minutes as Colombia beat Japan 1-0 in a friendly in Yokohama.

Former Manchester united man Radamel Falcao scored the winner from the penalty spot on 64 minutes.

Lerma could feature in a friendly against South Korea on Tuesday.

Cherries striker Joshua King could feature for Norway when they take on Spain at the Mestalla tomorrow.
