POOLE Comets’ Macie Schmidt added another international gold medal to her collection by winning the ICSF Women’s Cycle Speedway Championship in Poland.

Her success was a great reward for her hard work in training, having broken her collarbone little more than a month ago.

Beaten in her first ride, Schmidt fought back to win her remaining four outings to finish with 19 points, the same as her arch rival Laura Watson from Sheffield.

And it was Watson who was quickest away in the run-off to decide the title before Schmidt made a superb pass to take the gold medal.

It completed a unique hat-trick for the Poole racer, with Schmidt adding the European title to the Under-16 World Championship and the British women’s crown.

Poole’s success continued in the men’s events with Fraser Garnett taking the bronze medal in the world junior final after a run-off with hometown favourite Wojciech Malecki.

Garnett finished on 17 points, one ahead of Poole team-mate Ben Tinsdale, who just missed out on a medal.

Ben Mould kept the club flag flying in the men’s senior final, scoring 15 points to finish fifth.

“It was a tremendous performance by all of our competitors,” said Poole Comets spokesman Pete Barnes.

“It was an outstanding result, not only for the club and its sponsors but also for the town of Poole.”
