GOLF legend Dame Laura Davies hailed the “meteoric” rise of Women’s British Open winner Georgia Hall.

The 22-year-old on Sunday became only the fourth Englishwoman to win a major championship – joining the likes of Davies, Alison Nicholas and Karen Stupples.

Former world number one Davies is set to partner Hall as one of the Great Britain teams competing at the European Team Championship, starting at Gleneagles tomorrow.

She told Sky Sports: “Georgia's progression is meteoric really. There was the Solheim Cup last year and her third-place finish at the British Open was one thing, but this is another level.

"She had a bit of a rocky start on the LPGA Tour but then she started making cuts on a regular basis, then top-10s and is now a major champion.

"She can draw on this for years to come. There will be times where she's not going well and she can think ‘wait a minute, I did it in the ultimate pressure on my home turf and in front of huge galleries’. That's going to stand her in really good stead."

Coventry-born Davies has competed in 12 Solheim Cups and recorded 85 tournament victories.

But the 54-year-old backed the former Oakmead College pupil to inspire the next generation of stars in the sport.

"There were lots of little boys and girls watching the final round on TV and they saw a young girl, at the top of her game, winning something quite sensational,” she added.

"Hopefully, they're going to say to their parents they want a set of golf clubs and who knows, she might end up inspiring the next British women's major champion.”

Speaking about partnering Davies at the European event, Hall said: “I can’t wait to play with her. She is a great role model for English women and it should be good. It’s amazing to join her on that list (of major winners).”
