RAPID starter Callum Wilson is eager to get full preparation under his belt and add to his remarkable early-season scoring form.

A second serious knee injury prevented the Cherries frontman from training alongside his team-mates during the opening months of last season.

Having featured for the first team from October, the 26-year-old admitted he was “playing catch-up” as he went on to score nine times in 31 appearances.

But with a full pre-season training schedule awaiting the Cherries star this time round, Wilson is adamant he will replicate blistering starts he has made in the past.

He told the Daily Echo: “If you look at my statistics when I have had a pre-season, I have previously been on 10 goals by October.

“I always seem to start well and that’s down to the team here, the staff always putting on good sessions and getting us fit, as well as hard work.

“I need to do it again and, with a good, full pre-season, I am looking to have a strong Premier League campaign.

“It’s huge and I am looking forward to it. I need to make sure I have the time to switch off mentally and physically and then hit the ground running from there.”

Wilson scored nine goals in as many games for Coventry at the start of the 2013-14 campaign.

A season later, he had struck 11 times by the end of October as part of a 23-goal haul to help Cherries seal the Championship title.

Despite making the step up to the top flight in 2015, the clinical frontman scored five times in six games for Eddie Howe’s men at the beginning of the season.

Reflecting on his most recent campaign with the Dorset club, the former England under-21 international said: “It was frustrating because, when you know you are missing the first 11 games, you are playing catch-up.

“Then I came back and had a bit of delight in scoring and having a good run. Then I had a dip in form and goalscoring.

“I finished with nine goals in total for the season and know I could have had a lot more with a few chances I had, missed opportunities with disallowed goals, and penalties not being given.

“But I am not one to blame external things – everything is internal and I will improve over the summer.

“It’s about maintaining your character, putting in good performances and coming back from it.

“You look forward to pre-season because you have had that time away from football. You are excited to get back.

“After day one you are not so excited! But you want to see the boys and see new additions to the team.”

Wilson ended a 12-game scoring drought when he fired home the winner at Burnley on the final day of last season – helping Cherries to a 2-1 win and 12th in the Premier League.
