CHERRIES today officially announced the release of six players – including defender Baily Cargill and goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

Cargill and Allsop were told they would not be offered new contracts once their current deals had expired at the end of next month.

Under-21 squad members Joe Quigley, Sam Matthews, Ollie Harfield and Pat O’Flaherty are also not being retained by the club.

Chief executive Neill Blake told the club website: “All six players have been through long periods with the club and have come through a lot.

“It is the right time in their career to progress and we have no doubt they will have long and prosperous careers in the game. We wish them all the best in their careers going forward.”

Cargill spent the second half of the season on loan at Partick Thistle and earned some rave reviews despite the Jags suffering relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

The 22-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at Dean Court, made 11 appearances for Cherries, including one as a substitute in the Premier League during the 1-1 draw against Manchester United in March 2017.

He came off the bench as a 78th-minute replacement for Tyrone Mings in front of a crowd of 75,000 at Old Trafford to become the first graduate of the club's academy to feature in the top flight.

Cargill, who starred as Cherries reached the League Cup quarter-final for the first time in 2014-15, also served on loan AFC Totton, Welling, Torquay, Coventry, Gillingham and Fleetwood.

He captained Cherries to victory in the third round of the FA Cup at Birmingham City in January 2016 and has also been capped seven times by England under-20s, scoring on his debut against Canada at Dean Court in November 2014.

News of Allsop's imminent departure surfaced last week when he admitted his future lay away from Vitality Stadium following a five-and-a-half year stay.

The 25-year-old, who made 27 appearances for Cherries, spent the second half of the season on loan at Lincoln, helping them reach the League Two play-off semi-final.

Allsop played a key role in Cherries' promotion to the Championship, keeping six clean sheets in 10 games at the end of 2012-13 following his free transfer move from Leyton Orient.

He has spent much his time on loan and has also served Coventry, Wycombe, Portsmouth and Blackpool.

One of Eddie Howe’s first signings in his second spell as manager, Allsop made two Premier League appearances for Cherries.

Boss Howe has already spoken publicly to the Daily Echo about Matthews's exit, saying the club had to release him for the sake of his own career.

The Poole-born midfielder, who joined Cherries when he was 10, netted six times in 39 games during a productive loan spell with Eastleigh this season and was voted player of the year and players’ player of the year.

As a teenager, he attracted interest from Manchester United and was fast-tracked to Howe's first-team squad in 2013.

Matthews joined Cherries on a pre-season training trip to Switzerland and appeared in first-team friendlies against West Ham and Real Madrid.

But his progress was hampered by injury, including sustaining serious damage to his ankle just minutes into a loan spell stay with Poole Town in September 2014.

He has already attracted interest from a host of clubs, including the Championship, League One and League Two.

Republic of Ireland under-21 international Quigley had also been part of Cherries’ set up for more than 10 years.

Schooled at Priestlands in Lymington, the striker's loan clubs included Torquay, Wrexham, Gillingham and Woking.

Quigley finished the season at Boreham Wood and came off the bench in their National League play-off final defeat to Tranmere at Wembley.

Defender Harfield featured 17 times during a loan spell at Poole Town before linking up with Quigley at Boreham Wood.

He signed a professional contract with Cherries at the end of the 2015-16 campaign and played for the first team in a pre-season friendly against Valencia last summer.

Goalkeeper O'Flaherty has played locally for Wimborne, Bashley and AFC Totton and ended the campaign at Gosport Borough.
