CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe tipped Lewis Cook to soar to even greater heights after the midfield star penned a new four-year deal.

England international Cook enjoyed an excellent individual campaign as Cherries secured their Premier League status and will remain at Vitality Stadium until at least the summer of 2022.

And Howe reckons Cherries supporters will see "the very best of" the former Leeds United man in years to come.

He told the club website: “Lewis has shown huge patches of potential throughout the season but he can get even better.

“It can be easy to forget how young he is. It feels as if Lewis has been around forever because he broke into the first team at Leeds when he was very young and has achieved a huge amount in a short space of time.

“But that’s a great thing for him and us – he has plenty of experience and we have a really talented young player who will be with us for many years and we will see the very best of.

“I believe Lewis will continue to improve and get more consistency in certain areas of his game which we have highlighted to him. We are looking forward to developing him further."

A £7million buy from Leeds United in the summer of 2016, Cook made his first team breakthrough towards the end of his first season at Cherries.

And the 21-year-old kicked on in the campaign just gone, making 33 appearances in all competitions and playing a key role as the Dorset club banked the second-highest league finish in club history.

On the back of that success, Cook admitted he had wasted no time putting pen to paper.

He said: “This new contract is a really proud moment for me and the icing on the cake for the season we’ve had and all the hard work that’s gone on behind the scenes.

“It came as a nice surprise. I was just concentrating on my football and playing games but when it was spoken about, I couldn’t wait to get it signed.

“I’m really enjoying my football here and I’m looking forward to the future with AFC Bournemouth.”

Last year, Cook became the first England skipper since Bobby Moore to lift a World Cup as England under-20s triumphed in South Korea.

The York-born ace won his first senior cap when he came on as a substitute against Italy in March.

Cook is on standby for the World Cup and, alongside Cherries goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, has been named in the England under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament.

Ramsdale receives his first call-up at under-21 level having spent the second half of the season on loan to Chesterfield, who finished bottom of League Two.

England begin their campaign against China on Saturday, May 26 before facing Mexico three days later. Aidy Boothroyd's side round off their group fixtures against Qatar on Friday, June 1.

A further game awaits on either June 5 or 6, which could be a semi-final.
