PIRATES chief Matt Ford says it is vital the risks riders take on track are never forgotten.

The Dorset club will pay tribute to the four riders who died following crashes at Poole when they celebrate their 70th birthday on Thursday.

Pirates face Yarmouth Bloaters in a rematch of the first meeting at Wimborne Road, a fixture in which Yarmouth's Reg Craven sustained injuries which saw him lose his life eight days later.

Poole duo Johnny Thomson and Kevin Holden and Norwich's Malcolm Flood will also be remembered.

Speaking to the club website, Ford said: "Speedway is a dangerous sport and we should never forget the risks riders take when they get on track.

"While this meeting is a celebration of 70 years of speedway in Poole, we will also mark the passing of Kevin Holden, Johnny Thomson, Malcolm Flood and Reg Craven before racing begins.

"I'm sure Reg would approve of us putting together a special Bloaters team and I can't wait to see the club's colours back on Poole shale."

Pirates asset Nicolai Klindt has joined the Yarmouth line-up which includes Troy Batchelor, Rohan Tungate, Ricky Wells and Jason Garrity.

A history of Poole Speedway will take place at the stadium from 2.30-5.30pm. Racing is due to start at 7pm.
