LASER sailor Sam Whaley will this week take to the waters of Hyères for his World Cup series debut.

The 21-year-old from Swanage is prepared to test his skills against Olympic medallists and a host of elite sailors from across the globe.

Whaley has joined the 47-strong British team on the south coast of France and has settled in well to his new surroundings.

He said: “It’s been a great experience. There’s been lovely weather and we have had a few good days training.

“With it being my first World Cup event I’m not really sure what to expect but I’m sure it will be quite similar to the other big events I have done.

“I’m more excited than nervous. I just can’t wait to get on the line and start racing.”

One person Whaley has been quick to learn from is Olympian Nick Thompson. The 31-year-old from Lymington – a world and European champion in the laser class – has tipped the youngster for success.

“Sam is definitely a talent,” he said. “I’m sure he will learn a lot from this experience and, hopefully, take it forward. I’m sure you will see him at more events like this in the future.”

Whaley, Thompson and the rest of the British team begin competition tomorrow, with two days of medal racing across all classes on Saturday and Sunday.
