BOSS Eddie Howe felt Cherries had been on the wrong end of another contentious refereeing decision during last night’s 2-0 defeat by Manchester United at Vitality Stadium.

Cherries had been trailing to Chris Smalling's first-half opener when United defender Luke Shaw tangled with Callum Wilson midway through the second half.

Shaw clearly hauled back striker Wilson as he prepared to convert Josh King's cross, although referee Graham Scott turned down Cherries' appeals for a penalty.

The decision was met with incredulity by BT Sport pundits, with former top-flight referee Graham Poll and ex-Cherries boss Harry Redknapp both amazed it had not been given.

To rub further salt into Cherries' wounds, Romelu Lukaku then came off the bench to kill off Cherries with a second goal 20 minutes from time.

Howe said: "Callum got goal side and had a chance to tap the ball into an empty net. He was thrown off balance and, for me, it should have been a penalty.

"It was a key moment in the game. We were 1-0 down and chasing the game against a top-quality team, which isn't easy.

"We had a really good spell in the match around that time and, on the balance of play, I thought we deserved to get back in the game.

"It wasn't given and it didn't happen. Then, they showed their quality on the counter-attack. It was frustrating because there were a lot of good things about our performance.

"I thought it was much improved from the Liverpool game and we could consider ourselves unlucky."
