JAMES Hayter believes his record-breaking hat-trick could be eclipsed – but only by a player who chooses not to over-celebrate.

Hayter made history when he netted three times in 140 seconds during Cherries’ 6-0 victory over Wrexham at Dean Court 14 years ago on Saturday.

It remains the fastest hat-trick in the Football League with Sadio Mane holding the record in the Premier League.

The Senegalese achieved the feat in two minutes and 56 seconds in Southampton’s 6-1 win against Aston Villa in May 2015.

Hayter told the Daily Echo: “It wouldn’t surprise me if it was beaten but it will take some doing in this day and age because of the way players celebrate.

“I have never been one to go overboard when I score so that definitely saved me a good few seconds when I scored mine.”

Recalling his exploits, Hayter, who came off the bench against Wrexham, added: “I remember getting a phone call from the club media man Mark McAdam telling me there had been lots of requests to interview me.

“The next day, I got to the ground and the room was full of journalists. Usually, only the Echo, the radio and the club media were there. It went crazy.

“It went viral and I got letters from all over the world, Australia and Thailand among them. It was a smallish club at the time but it certainly put me and Bournemouth on the map.”
