HAMWORTHY United boss Brendon King admitted he was happy to see other teams’ fixtures pile up towards the end of the campaign.

The County Ground outfit are flying high in third spot in Sydenhams Wessex Premier, having chalked up 62 points from 32 games.

Only Poppies and Alresford Town have completed more matches than Hammers, who have 10 fixtures remaining.

Speaking ahead of today’s trip to Newport (3pm), King told the Daily Echo: “Hopefully, the other sides who can catch us are going to be playing Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in a few weeks’ time.

“For us to have played as many games as we have and got the points on the board, it is in our favour.

“I would rather have the points and the games out of the way.”

Hammers’ 3G surface at the County Ground has helped ease any fears of fixture congestion, with an array of games around the league being washed out in recent weeks.

“We know if we play at home it is going to be on, unless something has gone terribly wrong. It’s nice to have that,” added King.

United pair Eddie Hodge and Billy Walker are unavailable. Victory could take Hammers into the top two.
